Drop In Pitches

Anyone care to explain how this works? Grown elsewhere then what?! Secretly snuck onto the ground by elves overnight? Flown in by fairies etc?

They are basically in a big baking tray (for want of a better description). The ground is then prepared in that tray (ie, grass grown, rolled etc etc like a normal wicket.

Said tray is then able to be moved and slotted into position on the field of play

They are grown/maintained as a block/pitch in a greenhouse type environment. The blocks/pitches are not put back in the ground away from the playing area and then dug up and put back into the middle of the playing area they are destined for.

Did a tour of the MCG last weekend and they explained it all! Pretty awesome process. What impressed me the most at the g was the bowling machine they have at the indoor nets facility, it is in synch with a projector that shows video of any particular bowling running in to bowl, and at the point of release the bowling machine delivers the ball. Very cool!!!

Anyway don't want to derail the thread :)

Unreal! Would love to have a go at it...like facing an international player without actually getting a baggy green!
