How long should my self-repaired bat last?
« on: April 21, 2014, 02:24:00 PM »

Hi all,
I recently repaired my Ice Sub Zero, which I had given up on as bust. A friend, when it was nearly new back in 2009, managed to hit the back of it into the back of a net post, and it has split from that, a fairly long way up the spine to either side. I decided it was worth go at fixing it after my GM started to sound a bit dodgy and I couldn't time a ball with it for some reason, and because a uni team mate used the Ice and said it felt great despite the break. I have previously super-glued in the crack on the back, and have now glued around the edge of the break, and left it in a vice in order to make sure it was securely held (which led to me gluing a towel to it). I also put tape around the bottom of the crack, and higher up, and I also have extra stickers on the back, partly to hide the crack, partly to hold it a bit, and also because there was no more room on my laptop for them. I am asking because I used it at the weekend at training, and it felt like the gun it used to be, and I plan on using it to start the season, and I hope that it can bring success because it is the bat I scored four of my five 50s with. I will upload photos so you can see. I hope that the stickers don't violate any rules, they are not cricket brands, just random ultimate frisbee stickers I had lying around.
Thanks :)

I am having issues getting the pictures small enough to be uploaded and still visible, so I shall describe the crack as best I can:
On the inside edge (I bat right handed), from the original damage about 2 1/2 inches from the toe, the crack stretches from the end of the spine/dent up to slightly above the main swell of the middle, about 6 1/2 inches in total,  but from about 1 1/2 inches from the dent it is very shallow, almost superficial.
On my outside edge, the crack stretches about 5 inches up the bat, and is slightly deeper from the initial impact to about 2 1/2 inches up the crack.
On both sides the cracks are not up grains. I know this isn't a lot to go on, but whilst I have some experience repairing/refurbishing my bats and my brother's bats, I have never tried to fix another crack like this.
The bat is still powerful, and sounds better than my nearly new GM, and has incredible ping whilst tapping up, which makes me optimistic about its potential longevity.
If I can find my dad's video camera, I will make a quick video showing all the angles, and how well it still pings and sounds, stick it on my youtube and post the link.
Thanks again all.

The repaired area should be stronger then the wood its self if done correctly but there's no guarantee that the repair will hold and for how long.

Here are some pics:

Hopefully these can give a better idea of the bats condition.
