Hi all,

I'm new here, & want to ask for some bat recommendations for our team. I'm playing with a university research cricket team just outside London, and we've been given some funding from the union to spend on new gear. After new gloves etc, we now have �250-300 to spend on 2 bats.

We have a range of experiences, from 1 total newcomer, to people who have either played for a few years, or had a few years out, up to some county level players. The better players will of course have their own bats, but we need 2 bats to cover a range of levels & styles.

there is a lot of choice, & some really beautiful bats out there. But I had been looking at some Newberys (TT, Tomahawk, Mjolnir, Krak, GT, possibly Uzi), as the TT, Tomahwak, GT & Uzi are on offer around �120 mark. Any particular models, or other bats you could suggest to cover our needs.

Thanks, some decent, rapid feedback is really appreciated. I'm excited for the upcoming league starting in 2 weeks.

If you go to most of our Sponsors with �300 you might be able to get yourself 2 custom made bats.

Otherwise you cant really go wrong with visiting IJC as you are outside London, with �300 I can guarentee you could get yourself two nice new bats. As good as the Newbery stuff is, don't feel you have to go down that route.

I should add a few extra details maybe. Most wickets around here are low, with one exception being a team using an artificial wicket. Important aspects for the bat are good pick up as this will suit a range of players (relatively inexperienced), also a larger sweetspot would be nice to reduce the margin of error there. sweetspot is probably best low-mid as wickets are low & the openers already have their own bats. Any other details you want let me know

Some advice, as garnered from CricTech. Even though the pitches may be low, you'd be better off getting mid-middled bats. This is because the average batsman hits the ball in the same place on the bat regardless of the pitch type. Given these bats are for sharing, mid is likely to apply to most batsmen, provide good balance and give you a decent sweetspot.

The other reason for going mid is that it is likely to provide a middle closer to most people's hitting point rather than a low, which may suit fewer (basing the hitting area on a normal distribution curve, for which Crictech would probably need to confirm this, and potentially point at what would be best for the average batsmen based on their experience).

Given that the bats are going to be effectively "club" bats, I am not sure spending more than £100 per bat is a good plan. I would speak to the likes of UZI or MSR and get some value for money bats - for you budget you would almost certainly be able to get 3 - which I think would suit you better

We currently have two functional bats, & half the team have their own bats, so two would be enough, but I will take on board your idea of 3 cheaper bats

I had seen Slazenger V100 TAS Test from sports direct reduced to �77, & Hunt's County Reflex around �80. Anybody know about these?

As has already been mentioned, MSR or Uzi Sports will sort you out if you're looking to budget the cricket bats accordingly. If you are interested in Hunts County then speak to Vitas cricket on here. Failing that use Sports Direct as a very last resort as what you get is essentially a gamble!
