After what I thought was enough knocking in (approx a month) a proper oiling and a net with slower bowling my bat is starting to develop cracking on the face. In addition the heartwood is taking some serious dents from the ball.

Any advice as to what I need to do about this.

Just by looking at the seam marks id get back to knocking in.Maybe even with a deluxe mallet.Paul uses it in his ijc videos

It's only the heartwood that has taken seam marks so must be very soft. I thought I had knocked it in properly but obviously not. More concerned that the crack will continue to open up unless I do something about it.

use a scuff sheet, and more knocking in, crack should be fine, dont worry

Heartwood tends to be more brittle, so don't worry much about it. Give it a little more knocking and a little sand. If you're worried about the crack, just leak a little bit of watered down PVA on the crack and rub it in, leave to seep in and dry and then sand.

I would also add a G clamp on that with two small strips of wood over a little string if you have them to bind the crack just leaving PVA will just leave it open.

I'll give it a go with the scuff sheet as I know how to do that. Clamping and glueing sounds like something I would have a 99% chance of ballsing up

The bat certainly needs further knocking in, perhaps you need to strike it a little firmer with the mallet. It may also be as a result of inferior cricket balls that are too hard.

With regards to the crack, thats nothing to worry about. If you use some very fine sandpaper over the crack, it will pretty much disappear.

Looks very very soft. Doesn't look like it's had any knocking in at all to be honest. Get a mallet and hit it a bit harder I think. Proper knocking can be done in about 4 hours so not sure how much was done over a month

it must be really soft as its only the heartwood but will get the mallet back out and give it a hit. knowing some of the guys at nets a few of the balls may be getting extra looking after just fo nets

After a bit more knocking in have a good old blast against the bowling machine

My advice would be do not get to concerned, certainly knock the bat in further where the seam marks are but all bats should crack. I would apply a scuff sheet and leave it as small horizontal and vertical cracks are normal even if the bat has been properly prepared. Always remember when cracks do appear depends on each individual piece of willow.
I have bats where the blade has cracked immediately upon use and other bats which have not cracked for a season or more.
