My Butterfly Grade 1 Silver Sovereign
« on: May 18, 2014, 03:33:14 PM »

I've had this bat a few weeks now and promised Paul I would do a review but apart from knocking the bat in, i've not yet had chance to use it as the result of a back injury. Things are looking up on that front, so hopefully it will get it's first use in the next couple of weeks.

I had been mulling over a butterfly for some time and eventually decided to go for it when Paul introduced his G1 Butterfly. The ordering process was very simple and Paul responded to my emails promptly which was great considering how busy he is. I fired off my specs (2.10 dressed, oval handle, mid-high swell) along with payment and about 10 days later I received an email to say he hoped to ship the bat out the following day.

First impressions when I opened the box was obviously the appearance of the willow considering it is a butterfly. 12 pretty straight grains with a small butterfly stain just below the sticker with the more predominant staining on the back. The updated stickers really help set the bat off and the black and chrome exudes class (shame i'm not a classy batsman). Next I grabbed a ball and tapped it up on the face. The bat's obviously not knocked in at this stage but the response was exceptional. It did feel slightly harder than my Hawk and Woodstock bats but there was no mistaking the potential performance this bat would give.

Now considering butterfly clefts are supposedly heavier than a standard cleft, I was quite surprised by the size of the profile. I'm not one who has a preference over concaving/no concaving however I wouldn't go for something heavily concaved like Puma seems to be heading at the minute. I would say the bat has light-medium concaving which has produced a 35mm edge and a decent sized spine and it picks-up very well if not the best of all my other bats.

I have taken my time over the knocking-in and not been able to any recently with my back, but the mallet didn't really make any indentation on the face but the edges were much softer. There was some noticeable difference with the mallet over the duration of the process but I think once it starts to get used fully it will really start to fly.

Anyway, here are the pics. I'll update this once I get chance to have a net.

When you look at the straight, even grains, you can see exactly why Paul classes these as a higher grade within the Butterfly range.

Looks a belter.

Have you had a chance to use it then? Looks like a very nice piece of willow...
