Joe, put some shoes on.

Great idea, love it, but if they gave 100% of their profit on just that bat it would cost them nothing. They would still cover their costs. In reality they are probably not going to sell thousands of them.

The PR exposure is enough of a return.

GM, 100% of profits is a good start.

Judging by his tentative grin and half-arsed thumbs-up, Rooty looks as if he has serious misgivings about the whole photoshoot.  :-[

Root looks annoyed... Probably because he can't watch In The Night Garden and have his afternoon nap... :D

Seriously though... He is doing a nationally-promoted photo shoot dressed like a pre-adolecent, then looking like he is being seriously inconvenienced. :-[

Not cool - You would have thought his manager, and the GM guys, would have said something to him. :o

However, great cause. Well done GM for that! :)

Not what you'd consider a big launch with an international player is it?  Looks almost like an afterthought...

Shoddy from Root though - stick a GM polo on him and photo from waist up should've been the order of the day.

Good on everyone though, a very good idea.  I was in touch with H4H thorugh work a couple of years ago and I suggested to them they should stock H4H bat grips.  I like to think this has all stemmed from my idea  ;) (I won't ask them for payment, they're a charity after all...!)

Playing against the MrCricketMrHockey guys on Saturday. I'll let you know if they are using one...

They must have pulled in a few favours to get this exclusive. Nice gesture on the donation.

Oooohhhh I like!
I wonder if they'll refurb a bat as a Help for Hero's one.

I've got a help for Hero's sticker on all my bats anyway but this would be great!

Here is the full press release that I have been emailed:

Rooting for our Heroes: England Cricketer Joe Root, Mr Cricket and GM team up to support Help for Heroes

Leading cricket retailer Mr Cricket has teamed up with premier English cricket bat manufacturer Gunn & Moore to launch a new GM ‘Hero’ cricket bat to support one of the UK’s favourite charities, Help for Heroes (H4H).

Paul Redfarn, Managing Director of Mr Cricket, whose brainchild this was, explained that H4H has become a key focus for the business and his family following the sad loss of his daughter’s boyfriend Private Robbie Hayes, aged only 19, whilst on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan in January 2010.

Paul said: “We have been trying to find a way to help those brave soldiers returning from war with life changing injuries, both physical and mental. When we approached Gunn and Moore with this idea they responded enthusiastically and we hope that between us we believe we can really help to make a difference.”

Gunn & Moore Managing Director Peter Wright said: “When Mr Cricket came to us with this idea we were delighted to help. Indeed everyone connected with the company, staff and suppliers alike, has gone the extra mile to help this idea come to fruition.”

The bat was formally presented by England cricketer Joe Root to Help for Heroes ambassador and avid cricketer Mark Taylor near the Tower of London the morning after the England v Sri Lanka T20 at The Oval.

Joe Root said: “The word ‘Heroes’ is much overused in the world of sport and it was a privilege and a pleasure to play a part in helping these real heroes.”

H4H Ambassador and Band of Brothers member Mark Taylor who the Charity has supported through his recovery and plays for the Help for Heroes cricket team said: “It is fantastic that GM and Mr Cricket have teamed up to make this happen and support H4H. The money raised really does help the wounded, injured and sick, whether it is a physical injury or a hidden wound.

“Help for Heroes helped me hold my hand up and say ‘I need help’. I’ve got the closest relationship with my family that I’ve ever had because the Charity has helped me deal with my PTSD and I have become a better person from it. The bat looks great and I can’t wait to give it a good knock!"

The stunning new Hero design will be made in GM’s factory at Nottingham and will only be available from Mr Cricket in Burwell Cambridge or from their online shop www.mrcricketshop.co.uk. It will retail at only £250 for the 5 Star Grade 1 willow GM bat with £50 going to the Charity for every bat sold.

It is hoped to raise over £10,000 for Help for Heroes.

Well, here's my H4H bat - I visited Mr Cricket today and tried about 7. As soon as i picked up this one I knew it was a wand - and the GM half moon grips are fantastic!!
It weighs 2lb 9oz and has excellent balance. The bat feels as light in the drive as it does in back foot shots - it's a gem. Here are some pics:

The stickers are excellent quality and there is a lovely bit of heartwood on the outside edge and towards the toe. Whilst the bat is great I think GM have had an absolute shocker and properly missed out here. Would it have been so much trouble to put the three strips on the LE gloves and the pads (where the dark blue already is) (and may be even on a bat cover) to complete the package - I would've bought the lot there and then - it's always disappointing when companies throw away opportunities like this when they lavish so much attention on their sponsored players in a faux attempt to make us want to buy their kit. It's collaborations like this that inspire me.
