Is it possible to use tennis balls on Bolas?

I need to get on that, would improve my reaction times to no end.

Would be a waste of time, the bounce would be totally different to an actual bola ball

If they were tennis balls, and they were on that length, they would be going over his head.

Wouldn't help your reaction time - speed out of the machine would be the same and as neon says, bounce would be all over the shop.

I was training with University in the Rosebowl once next to Michael Carberry who was practicing hooks and pulls with the bowling machine ramped right up. It was very impressive, he's a big boy!

desmond haynes used to spend 15 minutes of my training sessions blasting tennis balls at my head using a tennis racket from quite close in. The variable nature of it made it quite interesting and the fact it was a tennis ball simulated facing taller bowlers.

Hear that a lot but do you think that's true? Do you think the only difference between a pro and a very good clubbie is the intensity and amount they trained at in their late teens?

No. It's also innate talent.

its 50/50 for me

if you have never faced 85mph then you can not play it or probably even see it, simple as that. If you spend 6 months in the nets with the ball at 85mph then by then end you should be ok to see it and be comfortable. Whether you can play it well depends on talent.

When we were under 15s our coach used to spend the first 5 mins with the machine set at 80mph, left arm over, angling across us, well pitched up outside off stump. There was no need to play it. The last 5 minutes would be the same. The 10 mniutes in between would be at 60mph. Trust me on this, the 60mph felt very very slow. As time went on you got a little more adventurous and started to get in line with those 80mph balls and try to drive them.

give it a go.

1. you'll be suprised how quick 80-85mph is!!
2. you probably cant hit it
3. youll get comfortable with it
4. youll eventually conquer it

having it short and simulating short bowling is a big no-no!!

I have always thought it would make a great documentary series to take 11 2nd XI clubbies and subject them to the same training standards as the pros for 3 months, just to see how much they improve. Great nature v nurture debate.

some professional players make it and some get released in their early 20s. of course there are circumstances; injuries, fitness, attitude, politics etc.

however if you assume that all academy/2nd team players are equally fit and dedicated then the difference between making it and not making it simply must be innate talent.

i agree with the point that facing a lot of quick stuff from the bowling machine helps you get accustomed to it, but you still have to have the technical and mental aptitude to score runs off it.

Innate talent doesn't exist, nobody comes out the womb playing the cover drive do they?

No, but they come out of the womb with the physiological differences that make their hand eye coordination, reaction time, decision time, physical control of extremities, better than others, which when applied to cricket (rather than tennis, hockey, etc) is effectively innate talent.
