Right, well the spikes turned up, and they were GM branded so that kinda says it all really. They fit fine and are exactly the same shape as the asics ones but without the rubber covering.

I didn't manage to get any more sense out of Asics themselves, they just kept passing me from shop to shop. Head office didn't have a clue. Anyway, problem solved, after a fashion.
