Custom made bat
« on: June 10, 2014, 10:20:43 AM »

Hi Jake,

Thought I would make my first post having been a long time lurker.

I saw a thread around the start of the year where you were discussing the with another poster that you can get custom bats made by Hunts County for lower prices than Talent Cricket and with the possibility of you handpicking the cleft.

Here's what i'm thinking (and it may not even be possible) - Newbery tour profile with a Revolution style hole drilled into it to get even more wood across the profile. I live near the Sussex county ground and do like the Newbery Tour profile but can't warrant spending that amount on another bat. So I came across the previous thread and it started me thinking about a cheaper alternative with a twist. I have no idea how the Revolution hole thing works so by all means shoot the idea down if unworkable.

What do you think?

The drilling process requires a profile that gives enough 'space' to accommodate the hole. Some bats are very thin towards the shoulder area and the hole would create a weak point.  I haven't seen a tour for a while so i don't know what the profile is like.

It is also much harder to copy a bat based on pictures, but we will try our best :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I thought that may be the case with the hole - just thought about trying something a bit different.

That said, I don't need an exact copy of the tour profile and am more than happy to give the bat maker the freedom to adapt where they see fit based around the general Newbery tour convex profile and my specs. This may make the hole thing more viable but ultimately performance is of course a necessity and there's no point in a hole just for the sake of it.

Any ideas on approximate costs for G1 bat?

can't see how the hole saves that much weight really.

As Jake will know Tony has different size drill bits and told us he can save from 0.5oz to 1.5oz depending on what bit was used.

We sell G1 customs for £165, there might be a small charge for the drilling but it won't be much if anything.

Send me a pm and we can talk specs etc, I visit Hunts at least once a week so i can start to put the feelers out with Uncle Tony regarding the viability of your request.

As Dave has mentioned, the drilling can save around an ounce, sometimes more, it also depends on the density of the cleft.

1.5oz might be enough to make it worthwhile, but I remain seriously sceptical about the benefits of this particular innovation!

From memory I think Hunts reckon about 2oz.

I think the general minimum for a Newbery tour is 2.9/2.10 upwards due to the profile. However, they can look a bit on the thin side at the lower weights so just had a random idea that maybe the hole would enable a 2.11/2.12 profile but with a final weight after drilling of 2.9/2.10.

That said, I fully appreciate that this could quite possibly be a rubbish idea and the overall performance and balance of the bat not be good. Just an idea though as i don't know enough about how the hole thing works.

Just realised that whilst typing my post there were other replies - my last post was in response to Manormanic's original post.

I'm sceptical too - but lets see what hunts reckon. Jake - I'll PM you with some specs when I get a chance this afternoon (gotta get back to doing some work!!)

Thanks for your help and everyone's input so far.

Does the drilling effect pingyiness at all??

And I think I've seen somewhere about filling the hole with cork, is that a similar theory to using a lam is you do that?

I'm not convinced drilling a hole in the middle of the bat to reduce weight is a great idea but I'm no expert, anyone who's tried one and can prove it works please do  :)

(And I'll look for an extra long drill it in the garage)

They filled them with cork about 20 years ago i believe, this is illegal now though.

In terms of the normal drilling without cork, there are claims that it replicates the performance benefit of a delamination without the odd sound and imminent bat breakage associated with a delamination.

Whether it does this noticeably or not is up for debate, but the Turbo Revolution demo bat we have goes like stink.

Is there any difference in sound of a bat filled with cork? Is there actually any way of knowing?

Would you know if you played against one of these 'said' weapons?

Amended my last post to make it a little clearer.

Never seen or heard a corked bat so i don't know.

You're better off using a lighter "crown" cleft for a larger profile to weight ratio.

I imagine part of the Custom process will be a selection of clefts based on the customers requirements. Whether they weigh them to the same exacting detail I don't know.
