Sound of De-lamination vs Butterfly stain
« on: June 26, 2014, 11:19:07 AM »

Hi guys

I am looking at a bat that has been recently bought 2nd hand by someone, used very lightly prior to purchase and is about 3 months old.

I have tapped it up with a mallet and there is a rasp/rattle in part of the blade, around a small butterfly stain.  I have spoken to one person on here who I trust and says that the sound I have described is probably due to the slightly harder nature of that bit of the bat.  The bat performs really well and I 100% trust the guy I have spoken to, so I am not overly worried, but I thought I would check with you lot,

As I have never had a butterfly stain on the bat, so my question is ...

"Could a butterfly stain potential sound similar to a de-laminating bat when using a wooden mallet?"

Thanks in advance

Joel

I think so - I have had bats with "hard bars", and there is a notable difference in the sound coming from that part of the bat.

Despite what B3 says a knot running across the face is harder and cannot offer the same spring as clean wood. If the bat has a higher tone then it would be harder, if it has a double tap or hollow ring then it will be delaminated.

Regarding  Butterfly stains because there's less sap they are naturally harder which can produce a different contact sound which as previously stated is an higher tone.

I've just picked up 2 butterflies from b3 for team mates.

One has a predominant butterfly in the playing area. With a mall it sounds awful. And you instantly aren't filled with confidence.
But drop a ball on it and it rebounds phenomenally.

You just got to get used to the sound and any negative thoughts out of your head.
