Hi guys just wanted to share the little gem Jake managed to organise for a mate of mine. You may have seen my GM Six6 Jo Root players bat that I treated myself too. Well a mate at my club loved it but couldn't stretch to the Root edition and hadn't found any cricket shops close to him. So I offered to see what I could do for him and having used Jake on numerous occasions gave him a call.

My mate wanted a light bat and had £300 to spend max. So Jake gladly arranged to get me a light pick up direct from GM and a GM Original was comfortably in his budget. So the bat is 2.8 in weight and has 41mm edges in the F4.5 profile so slightly round face, with hardly any concaving so a super light cleft. The blade has a few marks towards to toe which to me is fine as these tend to make the blade tougher in my opinion. The grains are tight and very straight and over 10 of them. I know this is a light bat so pick up is bound to be good but this is great performance from an old ball is very good hitting up in the garden and hitting a few slip catches to my mate at the weekend.

Not a problem mate, glad he's happy.

Lovely straight grains, couple of little imperfections but nothing major.

am a bit surprised GM let that go out at such a high grade though, what with the lengthy blemish in the toe - I'm superstitious about such things having seen a couple of bats split right through that sort of blemish in the past!

Looks a beauty.I think its the one 'major' brand of bat I haven't ever owned or even used

I agree to an extent Manormanic, there is an argument to say in the past that this would maybe have been a 909; a grade that no longer exists to mainstream retail (i believe sports direct have 909's in their exclusive GM range)

This certainly isn't an 808 in my view, making it an Original grade. The performance certainly points to it being a high end bat.

Customer is happy, so I'm happy :)

I believe the mark your talking about (the dark line that runs up the bad) is called a growth line. From my knowledge these are a part of the tree that died during growth and are indeed very strong. Had one on my X181 and it was a cannon before I sold it lol.

It's a line of 'false growth'. It means the tree stopped growing for a year.

Chris is correct it is what is known as a growth line they are usually found very far apart and they have quite a different hardness than the rest of the willow. I believe it is caused by withering.

From J.S. Wright's website: "A very common imperfection is the “False Growth”. This is caused when for some reason the tree has stopped growing for maybe one season. It can be caused by drought, fire or weed killer. Nine times out of ten there is no weakness in the bat and they will certainly not break along the False Growth. It will normally run parallel to the normal grains."

Well in most, if not all trees, that line is a major weakness, wouldn't be able to sell it for furniture.

I meant the line of false growth rather than the bat, but having seen the bat throne I might be tempted to make a similar throne for myself....

as noted above, I've seen two examples that clearly disprove this - one very nice old style GN Powerbow and a mid range SS.
