Top end bat quest. Results.....
« on: July 03, 2014, 02:41:23 PM »

About a month ago I came to the forum for advice on finding a top end bat having only bought cheaper options before.
I got a lot of great advice (aldred) and a few other bats in my team's top order now have the forum to thank for their sticks (aldred....)

Out of pure vanity I had my eye on the Salix range and after getting a great piece of advice I went to see Asad at Uzi sports. Again the forum was incredibly helpful and petehosk very kindly offered to give me a lift down to Swindon and show me what a real bat collection looks like (or at least a small part of his collection). It looks like a sackful of total guns btw (THE most ridiculous screaming cat amongst many other gems).

As people probably know, Uzi is an incredible shop. Just an overwhelming number of wonderful bats. Asad is very knowledgable and gave me a few great tips. Sadly the Torque in stock was a little heavy so I looked at all the options. The bat I settled on was pulled from a mystery back room. It is an Uzi pro and on first appearance and feel it was very impressive. Made by someone special and used by a lot of very good players these are wonderful bats. Another incredible one was being picked up on the same day and there were a few other beauties to choose from.
I wanted to give a full review and talk about how the bat actually performs rather than just its looks, so here goes.

2.10 with a mid middle and a touch of concaving. A lovely whippy handle with a slight oval shape towards the blade just as I like it.

11 straight grains with no blemishes. I am a big fan of heartwood but obviously the clean face on this one is very nice.

Now to the performance. The bat felt wonderful off the mallet. The middle is strange. It starts about three inches from the toe and stretches about 6-7 inches up the blade. What struck me as being unlike other bats I have owned was how consistent the response from this stretch was. Anywhere in that and even quite far from centre gives a noticeable crack. Really nice.

I gave it the usual week of attention and won't put a sheet on it until the end if the season when I know it has really opened up.
First couple of nets were also a bit unusual. The soft feel of the face is readily apparent and the ball sort of rebounds without much impact in the hands even though it flies off the face. Very nice to use but it really took a few sessions before it started to impress me (and everyone who heard it). This is surely to do with finding the timing rather than anything else.

At 2.10 the bat is slightly heavier than I am used to but this combines with the high performance to alter my follow through a bit. I know that I just need to middle it with a push into a gap and the runs will come.

All in all I am deeply enjoying it and it has confirmed my prior belief that not all bats are made equal. My fellow opener got a cracking Aldred and it's only a matter if time before we match but the Uzi is my first taste of top quality work and it's great fun.

Thanks Asad, petehosk, Simon May and cbf.

That looks a decent bit of willow.

Don't want to damage it though, best get a net bat and a wet weather bat in the same weight and shape to preserve it  :D

2.10 is a good weight for a bat and that profile has plenty of meat in the hitting areas.

The bat looks quality and the whippy handles sounds like my old Newbery Uzi had (before it snapped).

Hope it makes you a ton of runs.

Sadly for my ability it used to cost me about a $1 per run per bat plus fees and drinks....scary money.

Not sure  when you picked up your bat, but maybe your were on about myself picking up an Uzi black mamba pro?

I won't hijack your thread, but will try to get some pics up and a review when I get 5 mins. But as you mentioned above, they do seem to have an incredibly long, pingy middle( I've just gotta try to find it!)
