"Bigger edges make the ball go further"
« on: July 06, 2014, 10:54:13 AM »

A bit of background on this one, as some of you will have see in my refurb thread, I had a teammates spartan last week.
He needed a bat while I had it so I lent him my Flare if recently bought off here.

Said teammate smashed 75* with the flare and reluctantly gave it back to me, on the condition I promised to lend him said bat when we were in the same side. Being the nice bloke I am I agreed to this.

I've since used the flare in a couple of nets and I love the thing! Great balance and a generous sweetspot, I can see why he likes it!

It came to his turn to bat yesterday and he dived into my kit bag. Expecting him to take the flare I thought nothing of this. When he emereged to bat he'd taken my icon (admittedly a nice bat, but he'd never picked it up and had success with the flare previously).

When he came off at the end I asked why he'd used that one, having had such success with the flare the week before.

His response "this one has bigger edges so t'll hit the ball further"

If only it were that simple! I just smiled and agreed with him as I don't this the tea interval would have given me enough time to explain in minute detail why I disagreed, and he'd have probably got bored anyway!

All things being equal a bigger bat will make the ball go further.

But how you quantify equal is hard.

Bigger edges hit the ball further  at the expense  of the middle maybe.

Not if you take wood out of the toe and shoulders but then thats all whole new ball game and other issue like integrity of shape and balance.

Coverage or point??

Personally i like a big bat at a pick up i can manage something around 2-7 to 2-9.

or around 370-380 in our density spec.

I'm convinced big arms make the ball go further too.

Realistically having a bat with the middle in the right spot is probably more beneficial. I don't know anyone who intends to hit the ball with the edge. Does a bigger edge reduce twist for off centre shots?

No, the bat will twist more.

Ball goes further when you time it ;)

If some one could explain/convince to me how a big edge has any real effect of any thing I'd be impressed. Its just fashionable. Id guess because larger volume bats perform better at the same weight, so seeing a big edge implied that, if you see what i mean.

I am a huge fan of big edges and prefer huge ones on all my bats.

Icon didn't use to be a big edge bat - generally 30mm edges or 35mm on an Icon+ . Has some concaving but still a decent spine so not the extreme of a Flare at all. Had he taken a Kook that would of been a different matter.

The only effect I'm fairly certain of is that edges to the slips seem to fly, which may help prolong a ugly innings in lower grades ;-)

bigger edges also make it easier to actually GET an edge (instead of the ball just beating the bat)...

Really? I wouldn't have thought that because the face is no wider, I think it's more a confidence this with the illusion of having more wood in your hands that makes the big edge popular.

Not if you are playing straight.  Only when you are trying to angle the bat.

I think it has a lot more to do with the bowler than people think.  You see, when I bowl, that ball goes miles, but when I bat, it doesn't  :)

I prefer bats with big thick edges. For me it's strictly psychological.

If you're gonna edge cutting loosely then go hard or go home. Then tell me if a thick edge is better or not.
