New cricket spikes killing my achilles
« on: July 06, 2014, 04:33:06 PM »

Anyone got any tips to stop new my pair of cricket spikes killing my achiilles?

Strolled off at tea yesterday very pleased with myself after putting on an unbeaten 85 run partnership with our skipper but within 15-20 minutes I had come back to earth as my achilles was so bad that I could barely walk. I put on an old pair of trainers to field but blimey am I feeling it today.

Which spikes are you wearing now? What was the pair before?

Previous pair were off Ebay. CTek or something like that but were binned at the end of last season. I actually have two new pairs, a pair of Asics and a pair of Gray Nicolls but get the same achilles problems with both. Chatted about this yesterday evening and someone suggested that this happens with new cricket shoes but I don't generally have this issue with new trainers or new shoes so I don't see why I should have it with cricket spikes?

I am suspecting my only option is a thicker pair of socks and simply stick with one pair as they will eventually conform to the shape of my feet.

I have found using glucosamine gel has helped me a bit.
otherwise you just have to warm them up and cool them down well.

are your shoes wide enough/the right size?

A few years ago some new bowling boots went a long way in contributing to tendonitis in the Achilles; ruined my bowling for at least 2 seasons.  The reason for me was the boots were too high at the back and pressed on the achillies, the best thing was to get some gel insoles which I put on top of the existing insoles.  This raised my foot in the boot and did help.

raising your heal will help, as mentioned above

slight amendment Tim...

who knew standing at slip would be so dangerous!

Two?! That's just greedy. I hope they aren't performance enhancing!

I had this problem, I bought gel inserts from Sports Direct for about a fiver, they helped a lot, softened the blow and raised the heal. You should give them a go.

Thanks for all the advice. I think these inserts might be just what I need although that glucosamine gel also sounds worth trying for general aches and pains.

Standard insoles worked but didn't fix the problem.  I ended up seeing a sports physiotherapist who had some insoles made up specially for my foot shape.

Its a painful injury but once you've got your shoes sorted the relief is instant!

rupturing your Achilles feels like you have been shot in the back of the leg and is properly horrible.

May I ask, did you have any issues with your achilles before? I am sure my issues are self inflicted (in the form of poor fitting shoes) rather than any existing underlying problem but wondering should I give this weekend a miss?
