Batsman Padding up without playing a (proper) shot
« on: July 08, 2014, 11:35:55 AM »

Real frustration for me at the moment is the number of guys who don't even attempt to play a proper shot and don't get given LBW. I had two very good bats this season stuffed all ends up, but because the bat arrived 5 minutes later they are viewed as playing a shot. OK, oppo players umpiring doesn't help but even proper umps can't seem to tell when somebody has been totally stuffed by decent bowling. Being a spinner I probably get a few more cases of this than seamers!

Can you guys tell when the batter has shoved the bat down as an after thought?

Very subjective and open to a range of interpretations. It does seem a bit of a kop out as a batsmen, on a dusty turner mid Summer you can quite easily stick a pad out with a token gesture of a bat somewhere tucked behind it!

As a batsmen though I have no sympathy!

Not as annoying as the batsmen who put a big front foot forward and claim they can never be out because of it.  Always very hard done by.  Use your bat!

I think where people are playing bat pad and some attempt at a shot has been made then fair enough. It's where the bat comes down as an after thought because it's not turned or come on quicker that it annoys me. I would love to get some video footage on the subject, I'm sure a bit of slow motion would show a few batsman with the bat still in mid air when the ball hits the pad!

Only way round it is to get umpires (probably ecb prem level as they tend to have played a good level and know when you haven't played a shot) who give those out on a regular basis. I changed my technique a few years ago against spin to avoid getting triggered lbw. I stay more legside and play the line more with the bat, particularly to the ball turning away as I can't afford to play pad to a straight one.

I don't think it's right either!

However, I'm willing to accept some doubt if they have attempted to play a shot at it, even a half hearted forward defensive.

What does annoy me (as well) is when they clearly haven't moved very far off the crease and they have been yorked near enough. So many of these go to the batsman when they have barely the slightest hint of forward movement it's not funny. Last season, I did this to Kenibroo when we played Shipston and it was only hitting one thing, but it cost us the game when their umpire turned it down. You kind of shrug your shoulders and get on with it.

My favourite shouted line from an angry opposition fast bowler last year after being refused an LBW appeal:

"Oh FFS, everything is going down leg in this league".  Still cracks me up now!  :D

Forgot to mention, the guy saturday who padded up then played a ball that turned a fair bit with the middle of the bat. The guy wasn't a fantastic player of spin, he literally was trying to pad the ball away and it turned onto his bat as he brought it down behind the pad lol!. I joked with him "how did you know it was going to turn that much, I didn't" - true enough considering I had only turned a handful in my spell, most had gone straight on.

If you or Redders had been able to slip better then you would have won the game several overs earlier! (I would also like to point out to being given out LBW many times previously and after that game by Bradders the umpire on that day)

What I hate is batsmen taking a huge stride after being hit on the pads and claiming that there is no way that they could be in front!

Apologies for bringing up an old topic

I was given out in the previous season for not playing a shot.

1st I can semi-forgive because I was playing a defensive shot. Second spun back a mile from outside the off stump in a Sunday game, I got outside off to cut and it scuttled and kit me half way up the shin but outside off. Umpire said it was a poor attempt to cover up a leave... I cannot repeat what I said!

Umpires all have their own interpretation of these things. Least its not one of the umpires that interprets every noise off the track as an edge!

This is very common, people just planting on off, missing the ball, moving and then claiming they were outside the line etc.. Usually older guys too

You were 9 down and had it been given we would of won. We had a couple of similar instances at our place this year I'm afraid. I'll chat to you over a beer one day about it, rather than divert the thread.

A beer sounds good to me, we could hire a net somewhere with Reds and have a beer afterwards
