We still get bombarded with them even though we no longer produce bats/softs etc.

Sorry I might be hijacking the thread here, but I think that sponsorships should be for people that rely on cricket for a living or have financial hardships and those who get approached by companies because of their skill. I don't believe there should be scholarships for people who don't deserve one, like people play a lower standard of cricket, can easily afford their kit and people who won't help the company.

There is a difference between a sponsorship and discount IMO, a sponsorship is for someone who will add value to a brand by either having them use the kit or by representing the brand in a way that will benefit it. The brand will be willing to offer discounted or free kit in return for this.

A discount is where someone applies for "sponsorship" and essentially gets given a discount for doing so but tells everyone they are a "sponsored" player for brand X to make themselves sound good. I think the earliest example of this was from Classic Bats Company here in Bristol who used to offer a 'sponsorship" for everyone that walked through the door.

So the people who apply and don't deserve one get a "sponsorship", which gives a discount that ends up being the same price as a shop as their RRP is so high, like GN, where their 4th bat (matrix)down the line's RRP is $280! http://www.gnsports.com.au/products/au/gray-nicolls/bats/senior-range?&pg=1

Stop devaluing my childhood sponsorship Tom!  ;)

Having witness this season more and more young players being told by there clubs to apply for numerous sponsorships telling them they will get free kit totally wrong IMO to encourage something for nothing.

This is the problem, a year or 2 before I started Neon one of the lads at our club decided to email Shark, as a bit of a joke, to see if they'd give him a sponsorship - one quick email with a lot of BS written in it and they'd given him 40% off, no actual proof, they didn't even speak to the lad over the phone etc

Imagine my thoughts when you get coaches/fathers of players emailing for a discount/sponsorship and demanding at least 50% off because their player/son has played one game for the local district side - when I started out I got what I was given by my parents and I had to bloody well earn anything else, I had my first job at 13 mowing lawns for the elderly couples down my road, this used to pay for my minor obsession with Duncan Fearnley during my youth!

It maybe wrong to encourage but just look at all the silly 'district' 'county' teams you now have.. A lot of these kids and parents think they are something special when in fact it's got more to do with the club you happen to be at or how much mummy/daddy transport .

Not trying to sound funny but dom'county' really need u9/10's/11's etc.  After all, one of the best batsmen I've seen didn't even play till he was 15 and he's way better than all these people that have been through 'county'

Well if you take Worcestershire for an example, if you didn't play for the right club or you didn't go to the right school you could forget about getting near the county set up before you were at least 15/16.

Also, I do find it amusing how brands go on about how they pick people to represent them etc. Utter rubbish. They pick players on the top leagues who 99% of the real customers will have little to no exposure to. Hell, most people don't read the local rags so saying 'I'm in the paper each week', isn't really exposure.

I'm still to be convinced that targeting the right people within a club who will actively promote a brand and demonstrate to enough of the normal players that it's good kit. Gecko might annoy with the 'sponsorships' but I suspect that by doing this they will dominate their local markets in the not to distant future.. It's amazing how people will stick to what they know and will go back with them. Gecko don't care... Buy bat in for 90, sell for 'discount' 170... Still loads of profit, especially if you are shifting volume.

Sometimes whilst I agree that anyone below pro level shouldn't get kit, I do find it annoying who is deemed worthy and why volume is looked down on. If I could shift 400 bats with 40 quid profit or 100 bats at 100 profit, then I'd choose the former.. Why...because more people would see the brand, more exposure, hopefully more customers.

That's my point, so why bother with all this age group crap? Just leave them to the clubs and see who performs in cricket

I think you'll find no one wants to pay over £100 for a bat

You should see my inbox Garrett...

Mars/Gecko/Woodstock/Simply/Vanquish/Sabre being the main culprits

I had an application from a lad just this morning and he stated that his last 2 'sponsorships' were Woodstock and Mars - baring in mind he's only 13!!

I've heard of Mars literally giving their kit away, Woodstock are the same.  I actually asked Vanquish for a sponsorship last year and they only sponsor County/Minor County players so I don't think its fair to assume they are one of the "main culprits" lol.  Ive heard of simply cricket but I thought they did coaching? are they into kit now too?

Same at every county. Grammar school or nothing.... unless daddy knows the coach.  ive seen it myself playing county cricket, the focus certainly isn't on the development of young talent at that age.
