What is THE best bat (for me)
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:26:42 AM »

Hi All

My lovely fiancee wants to buy me a present, so I obviously thought of a new bat. I usually just go for an M&H in the end of season sale, but was thinking of getting something different this time, as it's a gift. I still wouldn't really want to go over about £250, as that would just feel a waste though.

A few questions, which I'd love people's thoughts on:

What do people generally think of M&H? My basic thought is they're very good, but overpriced unless it's in the sale?
My home ground is notoriously low bouncing, and as a result, I've turned into a front foot bully. Currently using a Solution http://www.millichampandhall.co.uk/Solution_bat/solution.html which I think is particularly low, even for a low middle bat. I'm starting to find I'm hitting it higher up quite often, and was wondering about getting something with a low, but less extreme middle.
I score enough runs (avg 35ish last few seasons) but don't think I'm a particularly natural timer of the ball, so was thinking about getting the biggest/most forgiving middle, rather than at the moment, where if it's in the middle it's gone, but feels a bit amazing or plinky, with little in between. Would something like a GN scoop be a good idea? If you can even still get these from last year??

Also wondering if the people who grow their own (Kippax, Salix?) are worth getting, as they save the best for themselves, or if that's just a gimmick?

Other thoughts I had were B&S, or Screaming Cat, when they're available again, so I don't stray too far from M&H!

Anyway, I'd love some thoughts/suggestions!

Forgot to add, I really am just after performance, not really fussy on looks, apart from an irrational dislike of Hunts County.

You have set some broad parameters. What about the weight if the bat?

Impossible to really answer mate but a Custom made but from many forum sponsors will be very good and I can honestly say you won't go wrong with a Salix or HitsHard mate if you want a performance bat. H4L and Aldred come very highly recommended and BB and Red Ink also made a great bat and can offer you what you want

you'll get loads of answers all of which will paraphrase the argument "well, my favourite bat maker is...."

that being the case, you should probably know that my favourite bat maker is Matt at Hell 4 Leather, about whose bats I cannot speak highly enough!

mate if you want performance you have to get a screaming cat, they are beasts. In my opinion Julian Milichamp is the best bat-maker in the world.

I would never disagree with this statement! JM is a legend and top quality pod shaver!!
BUT isn't JM poorly at the moment? And therefore unable to really do any podshaving?

Well my screaming cat is an absolute plank,  big waste of money.  Uzi pro,  bb or SS for me in terms of performance

I've got a scat and is ok. Nothing special. I got mine around this time of year and I believe it is at the end run of his clefts as I think he gets new clefts in November so this will probably be the best time to get a bat made from him.

I would go for H4L Hattori, long and low middle...and it's in your budget range
