Matches cancelled,bumping players
« on: July 27, 2014, 05:27:11 PM »

Something that used to happen a lot at a club is used to play for is,say a club has 4 teams and the 3rd XI game gets cancelled, half the guys from the 4th XI get bumped so big Jim and his mates from the 3rd XI don't miss out.
I always thought this was out of order as they've paid their subs same as everyone else and the opposition have to play a team of better players from a higher league than they were expecting.
I always thought it should be sorry lads game off,do something else or come and watch the other teams.
What do you guys think?

Doesn't happen at my club as when our first are off they can't go into the seconds, which I personally think is correct. What you are saying is terrible, it has happened to me in a midweek team though, turned up only to be dropped for one of the older guys just because I had already played for my own age group and he wouldn't be there on Saturday so it's only fair he gets a chance of a game.

Can't say I've seen this happen a lot,  but maybe that's because of registration rules.

Never seen it at cricket, but used to happen a lot for the various footy sides I've played for.

Trouble is it always seemed to have a negative effect, generally affecting team morale, and the first teamers thinking they were Bertie big b*llocks.

It happened once at our club. And only with 1 player.

First got cancelled. And the 2nds had a player that was gonna be an hour late.
so skipper asked if anyone wanted to play as the late guy was only coming cos we was short that weekend.
11 of us wanted to play but only 1 got to.

It them kicked off when the guy appeared only 5 mins late. Unaware he was dropped. And it went a little south.

Fair to say at the next committee meeting it was told to the captains. It was not to happen again.

Since the  our club works a little weirdly.  We have a core squad for each team (1st 2nds and 3rds)

If first only have 9 available. Then they other 2 skips are told players may be needed. But nothing finalised until Friday.
If nothing has changed since. 1st will either take a fielder from the reserves list. Or if a bowler/batsmen is needed. Take from 2nds and it works down through the teams.

We do this as our 3rds regularly get cancelled/conceded on a Friday morning(ground or oppo not us) and there best players than fill the gaps if needed.

No need to upset a reserve player by dropping him for a better player then.

So far has worked for 2 seasons without issue.

I was there for 4 seasons and it happened every time there was a gap week or cancellation.
I was never happy with it but thought it was what clubs did.

There would never be wholesale Chopping of firsts into the seconds for us, but the other week the firsts was cancelled and we got a bowler from them as we were a player down anyway.

I sort of think its probably okay to fill vacancies from a higher team, as long as  you're not dropping players.

It can get silly though - last  year I agreed to play for our fours, who were legitimately short, when we had a cry off.  Our skipper was so keen to win with a ridiculously augmented side that we weren't even allowed to make 50 and chip one up, so I ended up batting left handed....
