Forum bowlers - your variations
« on: August 16, 2014, 06:11:50 PM »

Hi all

One for the bowlers of the forum, what are your variations?
(would also be good to know if you bowl left or right arm and if you're a pace bowler, medium pacer or spinner?)

Right arm off spin always round the wicket, with a faster arm ball bowled cross seam

Right are medium pace, stock ball is seaming in (unless like today when I get hold of the ball and it's clogged up with mud!). Variation is the cutter other than that try and watch the batsmen and work them out as to what line and length to bowl or vary the pace - if I'm extra brave I try the one out the back of my hand but that's a rarity! Never bowl round the wicket either.

Used to be right arm fast. But more medium at more.

swing it in. And have either an away swinger or slower ball for the change up.

For midweek t20 stuff I also have a super duper slower ball!!!

I bowl right arm off spin (with a very unorthodox action!)

Got the off break, the off break that actually turns, a top spinner, the more flighted offie, the much quicker one, the doosra and the dernbach style back of the hand ball (comes out as a leggie).

Oh yeah, can also bowl each of these and grunt which really is a ploy to further confuse the batsman! ;)

Other additions I've forgotten in first run through, the one where my front foot lands on the popping crease instead of the batting crease, and the one I bowl off 2 steps (quick overs and try to catch batsman out).

Right arm quick...
I have the off cutter, I run in and bowl of my usual run and then just release it as an offie...
Back of the hand slower ball a la Dernbach
And then there is the secret weapon, the ball where I run and and then in the delivery stride slow right down and bowl it at like 20mph it's easy to see but with so little pace it hard to do anything with...

I don't have any variation unless you class right arm all over a variation?

Right arm off spin. Variation is the one that turns.

ok, when I thought lets take some pics, I hoped it would come out better than this...

I (used to) bowl a brisk medium pace, or right arm filth.
when I had been bowling a load I had quite a few variations, given I don't bowl much now, I only use a few of these.

1. stock ball. attempted away swing/seam. shiny side on the right

2. bigger away swing. not attempted much in a while...

3. in swing, usually drifts too far down the leg side!

4. leg cutter, needs to be a good day for this too work!

5 off cutter, again needs to be a seaming pitch. typically I don't have enough of a wrist flick to really get enough movement

6. slower one (never works for me this, the change of pace isn't effective enough, my stock ball isn't fast enough!)

7. other slower, it really floats out a treat, really confuses batsmen

When they all work :

1. Inswinger that continues in off pitch.

2. In swing that moves away off pitch

3 and 4 same movement off the pitch as above,  but are straight in the air.

5. Cross seam random

6. Seam in line (extra bounce,  occasionally moves one way or the other)

7. Slower ball,  bowled by twisting the wrist as though bowling spin on release.

8. Almost never bowled "splay" slower ball that looks like it is aimed at the batsman's had then dips just before arrival to become a yorker.  Fails 8 out of 10 times.  Fun to bowl though.

Seam up, with natural inswing. The stock delivery really depends on the day and the direction of the wind, but sometimes I'll bowl with the seam pointing at 1st slip, which just results in a straight ball, or if I hold the seam straight, it will be an inswinger. Whichever the stock delivery is, the variation will be the other. A slower delivery which ducks in is also a variation, the change of pace is normally noticeable as my arm speed decreases, but it's normally the swing that catches folk out.

Used to be able to swing the ball out or in at will, but seemed to have lost the ability to swing it out regularly. Also cannot bowl a cross seam delivery to save myself, it just feels so unnatural... :-[

Prior to injuring my knee landing in my delivery stride  which finish me as bowler I bowled uncomplicated right  arm wicket to wicket with delivery stride  close to the stumps seam upright keeping the shine on one side of the ball opening and closing fingers down  the seam or angle the ball towards the slips reversing the shiny side letting the dodgy tracks i play on do the rest.
