Playing against women
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:28:15 PM »

As the title suggests what are peoples thoughts?

I am playing/coaching a young provincial mens side this weekend against the NZ Whiteferns.
Apparently they have a couple of descent players.

I have a couple of conundrums. 1) Am I useless if I get out for a low score? 2) If I score a heap of runs am I a doosh bag?
I'm looking forward to it because its about 6 weeks out from our season and we get to play on the local international ground.
Thoughts?

(No Swearing Please) mate, are you playing it indoors???

Just play it like any other game. The only notable difference is the pace and the strength of the girls. They are still very good cricket players, just playing the game at a slightly lower pace. We had one of the girls playing for us in a few games last season (Taranaki Premier Grade) and she did fine.

Also, how early are you lads starting your season? We don't start till the 11th I think.

Why assume you'll have a choice of smashing them everywhere?!  We have a side that probably has the best bowling attack in our division, of which one of the four decent bowlers is a woman (her two brothers play in the same side).  She plays for her county and is a decent bowler.  I scored 70-odd against them and she was the only bowler I couldn't score consistently off - constantly bowling good line and length.

The thing that really disappointed me was most of our teams casual sexist comments and immaturity - most probably didn't even realise they were doing it.  Maybe because I've coached girls and women's (football) teams over the years it doesn't bother me.  There's no shame in getting out to them, or not scoring off them is if they're good players.  They are allowed to be...

When did I say Id be smashing them everywhere?
I want to know people's thoughts on the issue. Being the best lasses in NZ Id expect them to be pretty good. Not fast but good line and length bowlers. Nothing sexist at all...even though the boundaries are being brought in about 20 meters and we will be using a 142g ball.

I have played against 4 women in the past and 1 of them was not very good.
The othe 3 were all decent cricketers who played women County level.
One was and average bowler who would always bowl a couple of bad balls which you could take advantage of.
But the other two were absolutely on the line and length every sodding ball! They were always economical as they were so frustratingly consistent! They also took wickets from impatient batsmen who would try to slog them for boundaries and get cleaned bowled when they missed a ball!!

You didn't and I'm not being critical of those who have.  Playing cricket against women isn't like playing Rugby or Football - being stronger or faster is taken out of the equation in a non-contact sport, especially bowling in cricket where qualities like skill and guile are as successful as pace and power.

In my experience there's a default setting for a lot of blokes when they come up against women in sport - I saw it in a lot of my team and I didn't suggest you were the same, I was just providing anecdotal evidence.  But I'm sure someone will refer to type when you play them.

I played against a girl once when I was at Uni in a preseason friendly. I opened the bowling and she the batting. I was instructed to bowl at full pace as I was assured she played a very high standard of Women's cricket. First ball I slipped and stacked it and as a consequence sent down a brutal bouncer which she didn't see as she was distracted by me falling in such a heap. Pinned her right in her right breast. I felt pretty terrible.

Just show respect to all who play.

See the good balls and put away the bad balls.

If they are batting, bowl normally.

If you are quick, play the situation. If she is a number 11, expect deliveries on the stumps to get her out. If she is top 5, bowl to her like she is any other cricketer.

Did you rub it better for her??

On a serious note my sister played against men for a good number of years whilst she was at county cricket, never had any issues.

I should have offered in hindsight. I think she was an overseas player for the women's section of the club we were playing against. Their women's section was one of the best in the country and regularly beat the men's teams from recollection.
