Smileys laver and wood special reserve, mega profile.
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:01:25 AM »

My first laver and wood. Don't care on looks so went for the special reserve, the controversial "performance grade". Still not a cheap. Bat but are lever and woods ever?

So Messaged them, and got a reply from Anthony, I originally asked for the same profiles as chad has, but was advised the mega may suit my game better. On viewing some pics, I agreed, and set them on there way.

Anthony's replies were quick and fast for someone on the other side of the world, and despite the promise of info when the bat was sent and tracking details, which never happened.
The bat arrived in just over 3 weeks from order. So in terms of service and speed, they get a good 8.5 out of ten on that.

The bat, well I said, and I quote "I have no interest in looks, just performance, so send me any cleft you want" all though I tad bit of marking on the blade, I am once again impressed with it's looks. Just like the h4l devil, and red ink, I seem to have done well in looks on the low graders.

Stats asked for.
Mega profile
2.14
Round handle
Cork 3 spring standard handle.
Red stickers.

Arrived.
Mega profile
2.14 8(on arrival)
Round handle
Cork 3 spring standard handle
Red stickers.

Despite a gain in weight(don't all lavers) it seems spot on to my needs. But in one day of ownership, it now weighs 2.15 1. Haha. Bat has an obesity problem.

Ping, seems nice, feels good of the mallet. Currently knocking it and the red ink in. Neighbours must love me.

Any pics. Enjoy.

Just curious as why Laver owners don't oil/wax their bat as soon as it arrives!! it should sort out the weight gain/loss problem.

Nice looking bat there, what are the specs on it? Edge size spine height, etc.

It doesn't help - I've done it on the 2 Lavers I've had. It's still porous and allows moisture to creep in over time. I suspect the Laver workshop (ie NZ climate) is relatively dry.

L&W probably don't seal the bat with bat wax in case own wants to prepare the bat their own way.

I would assume the drying out process at L&W is very aggressive.

It must take place before the bat is made otherwise they would be having handles and blades going left, right and centre.

I know they have been looking at a new pressing process for low density willow. Might help with the weight gaining process.

I've absolutely no axe to grind with L&W - obviously very fine bat makers, but I do wonder about we forumites having double standards in respect of weight gain. - Oh that's L&W for you, they are a lark!
I tend to think that if this happened with bats made by other forum sponsors there would be less charitable comment.

How dare you ruin my thread with a valid point!

My h4l and red ink, arrived above my requested weight, but by similar margins to the laver, and all 3 feel fine, so I shall live.

Had the laver or any other bat arrived at 3.2 then it may have been a different matter.

I do wonder that l&w extra drying option, how much weight gain does that option have on it's worldly travels?
Got to remember, natural product and all that matter.

A bat I got from Jake put on 2oz from winter nets to now, I didn't even notice until I sacked it on the scales after a repai I did!
And said bat is great and I'd have no reason to complain about the product or the service.
Maybe it happens with a lot of bats but we don't notice as an oz or 2 isn't really all that much.

Sorry to hear that Cam, can't say I've noticed it with Robins GMs.

My own Laver has gained quite a lot of weight but i have removed the original thin chevron grip and added 2 GM control grips, they are all grip-gripped and taped and i don't want to mess about sorting them out again to find out exactly how much weight it's put on, in terms of pickup it is definitely heavier than it used to be.

I first noticed it when doing a pre-season refurb on mine. It felt noticeably heavier, i thought 'hmm have i got weaker?' All my other bats felt the same so i decided that it must be the Laver weight gain. I removed the original scuff sheet (which is quite thick and heavy) and replaced with a thinner lighter one, i also removed the toe guard to save some weight.

The bat definitely picks up heavier than when i first got it. Not to the point where i find it unusable, but it isn't as nice as it used to be.
