The tale of two Woodstock's (Airstream Platinum)
« on: August 28, 2014, 12:45:02 PM »

Morning all,

Recently, I took possession of the bat which won the AOC gear test from John. So pleased was I with it, I purchased a second from eBay as a backup.

People who want to know if there is any difference, have a look (The AOC bat is the darker, prepared one);

Differences

AOC bat has 41mm edges, the eBay Airstream has 35mm edges.
AOC bat has a spine of 61mm, the eBay Airstream has a 55mm spine.
AOC bat has less of a bow than the eBay Airstream.
AOC bat is softer pressed than the eBay Airstream.
AOC bat has an oval handle, the ebay Airstream has a semi-oval handle.
AOC bat is 2lb8.9, the eBay Airstream is 2lb11 dead.

In conclusion...

Both bats are finished extremely well - but the AOC bat is a monster compared to the eBay 'off the shelf' Airstream. Simply no contest.

Pretty much all the evidence you need to show why you should never trust a Gear Test. ;) Did you get the one from eBay for £120-£130? Really like the look of the AOC one, especially with the pretty much perfectly oiled look!

Both look good but the AOC looks a beast Phil. Does it pick up like what 2.6-2.7?

I would say it picks up its weight now. Before it was oiled and knocked (Only on the 2nd mallet stage of knocking that I use), it picked up like a twigg. However, I would like to use it for longer than half a season (A season if I am lucky).

Greg has the sister bat to this, I prepared it for him. He hit 128* and 89 with it in its first outing last weekend. He walked off on the Saturday and just said 'Cannon'.

On the Sunday we were playing in the league rep side with two guys who are sponsored by John, and neither of their bats were anywhere near as big. Greg's bat is actually slightly bigger than the AOC bat with 42mm edges and 63mm spine but is 2'9.5.

Yes mate. I thought at that price, bargain.

Always make sure I prepare my bats. When I was young, and sponsored by Newbery, Nick Keeley always used to say 'Make sure you knock them in properly. You wouldn't go in the middle without preparation, so why would your bats'.

Probably why I use the knocking in process I do.

Thats a very good comparison. I guess we should tweet this to Woodstock to see what their response will be .

It can be that it's a natural product and that leads to the variation.

How's do you compare the ping?

I would rather we didn't as would like to purchase from John in future! :D

The ping on the AOC bat is very responsive. The middle extends upto the stickers and is very wide.

Would be hard to compare the other without proper preparation but seems slightly harder pressed. Durability has to be a factor.

Could just be a trait of natural product.

I have a h4l tempo that is humongous, but has no bow!
My mate has a h4l tempo that is small in comparison, and has an extreme bow, both weight 2.15!

It is bizarre to see them side by side.
