My ankles are battered - any boot suggestions?
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:56:40 PM »

My ankles are knackered after years of pounding and a couple of horrible injuries. As such I was in the field in my Nike lunar dominates and suffered from a distinct lack of lateral stability and went over on my ankle a couple of times. I'm thinking of purchasing some bowling boots to give me cushioning and extra support. I've narrowed it down to two gusting four different boots:

New Balance CK4040 Cricket Spike
Adidas Twenty2Yds Mid Iv Spikes
(Nike Lunar Accelerate spikes - although after my dominates I'm not sure about their stability?)
(Asics gel speed menace were considered but due to the threads talking of poor build quality I rejected them as an option)

Anybody got bad ankles/owns any of these shoes? Can anyone think of any viable alternatives?

Cheers!

I haven't personally had ankle problems, but have used the adidas last year, and the new balance this year.

The new balance are the most comfortable shoes I've ever used. Good support all round and a sturdy boot.

The adidas have better ankle support, but personally I always felt unstable as they have very thick soles. As you mention stability issues, I'd recommend the NB shoes out of these 2.

Looks like it could be between the Nikes and the New Balance after all!

Mate, I've got the CK4040's. They're a pretty good shoe. Loads of stability, very lightweight and once they've been broken in a bit they are very comfortable.

Asics are the market leaders, we've never had a pair returned, can't say the same for the other brands, not to say the other brands are bad options but i wouldn't discard Asics based on one topic on the forum.

Fair enough I suppose - might finally be leaning towards the new balance though....

I'd not recommend the Nikes based on the sole alone. Compared to an ASICs sole, standing in the field all day in a fifty over match, the Asics far out perform the Nikes.

I've got a pair of asics at the moment, they are by a long way the most comfortable cricket shoe I have ever owned and offer great stability. There are many people at my club who have had the same pair of asics for years and have never needed to replace them due to the quality and durability being so good.

I've got terrible ankles - without the right precautions I wouldn't be able to last a whole game at 'peak' (for a unhealthy tubber like me) performance, I'd just be hobbling around in teh field, or only putting in 75% - which isnt what I want to do.

I wear ankle supports (bioskin tri-lock ankle brace).  They give me alot of support (especially the lateral twist that you mention).  I've tried a few different styles/makes, but seem to end up back at these.  They fit inside the boots as well as they are not too bulky.

I've had some asics for a couple of years (200NO I think) and got some NB (4030 I think) in a sale this year as the asics were just starting to show some wear and splitting a bit.  Both are comfortable and decent shoes from my perspective.

I consider myself to be one of the better alround fielders (apart from my catching which has been shocking this season...) but without the right precautions, I'd not be performing!

I'll have a look into the Bioskins as I've never even heard of them before - if they comfortably fit into a boot then that should sort me right out!!

I think you're crazy ruling out Asics based  on a few stories, by far the best shoes on the market.

Based on what I've heard here they're back into consideration. It's funny because I've always used Nike running shoes as they're great but never got on with the Asics running shoes due to their low upper portion profile.
Having used the Nike cricket shoes I've found them of a lesser quality and lacking in stability which has been very disappointing.
With that in mind and given the positive reviews of the Asics it's now a hard choice between them and the New Balance.

I'm the exact same as you mate love nike running shoes don't like asics but as a cricket shoe asics are unrivalled.

I need some new shoes for next year, had my adidas ones since 2007! Thinking of getting a pair of new balance shoes.

I think my old shoes have contributed to be getting what I believe is a shin splint.  Going to the doctor later to get it looked at!
