2015 gear review. What worked what didn't, good bad etc
« on: September 02, 2014, 06:32:17 PM »

Here is a short review/rating of what I have used this season. Only going to rate the things I've used a few times to many. Not the items that passed quickly through my fingers.

Helmet.

Ayrtek fake carbon lid with acis, with added titanium grill- very very good, light good vision, very comfy. Longest innings was 70 from 28overs and it did not effect my neck in anyway in terms of heavy ness, and still felt comfy, 9/10

Softs.

Gm 909 pads(2013) and original gloves(2014)- Pads felt too heavy and bulky 7/10 gloves, just didn't click, felt a tad large, and not as comfy to me as the usual sausage fingers I previously ran). 6/10

Gray nics maverick elite pads- so so light! An awesome pad, very comfy, and very very protective(haven't felt anything since) gutted gn have dropped maverick line, checking the sales for a back up pair! Highly recomended 9.5/10

Gray nics kaboom gloves- arrr, back in a sausage finger, a tad smaller than the gms, so fitted me perfectly, comfy, not to flexible, or inflexible. Good grip on bat, and very protective(took a bump on the bottomed hand fingers and no damage or much feel there) 9/10

Stretton fox inner outer thigh guard and chest guard, comfy, moulded to me well, very very protective, once figured out the straps, barely move during innings. 9.5/10
I would actually prefer them to have a fixed strap system rather than lose, or fit in shorts.
Chest guard, the strap is a tad short, and can constrict! But it does not move. 7/10

Shoes.

New balance 4030- love this shoes, very comfy, good fit, not fell over yet, what more do you need.9/10
Puma Karbon artificial rubbers, left over from last years kit, good shoe, comfy, great grip, but the rear foam has started to move around, and it takes some time to rearrange when you push down with the heel. 8/10

Bats, bats bats!!

Gm six6 original, very hard, pick up was good, and the ripple grips are fantastic, but just couldn't wait for it to "open up" so moved on. Is now sold. 6/10

Red ink g1 custom, great bat, if not a tad light, pings beatifully, moved to a heavier weight, so a fellow team mate has "borrowed" it and scored big runs.8/10

Ton heritage/le. Bought from Uzi, strange bat, two light for me(always have one 2.10 bat). Was stickered as. A heritage, but has limited edition wrote on the handle.
Our opener used it, and got a 93 before the handle snapped, and got out next ball. Ton was returned under warranty and returned with le stickers and a note saying "replaced heritage with correct stickers" bizarre?
Said opener still uses it. So "borrowed" 8/10

B3 butterfly in my profile, scored most of my 500 runs with it, 3X 50s, flies off it like no other, pick up and feel is great, but it's starting to crack profusely on the face, may have to retire it for 2015. 9.5/10

B3 butterfly in the f.... Dw profile, lovely bat, picks up well, and absolutely pings. May replace the above b3 permanently. 9/10

Rk laminate, well, errr, does what a 3.2 oz, short blade harrow width laminate does, makes the ball fly! Used it in 3 friendly games, hit effortless 6s, 1x 50. Shame it's illegal and wouldn't want to use it in a game. 11/10

Mb Malik laminate, my net bat! It weighs 2.14, and has a full fibre face sheet, and lots of tape to protect against the (No Swearing Please) sd balls in nets. Weights added to back to make it pick up, and weigh same/similar to the above b3 butterfly.
When I decide on a 2015 match bat, it will be modified to match that! 10/10(priceless as it saves damage to decent sticks)

Some may or may not find that off interest, can add your kit ratings below if wanted for comparison?

Top idea mate, interesting I heard the 2014 gms were softer pressed.

I haven't got quite as much kit but I will give it a go.

Duck and run centurion LE gloves - comfortable, great protection what more can you want? 9/10

Duck and run centurion LE pads - very comfortable, excellent protection, great value for money maybe a little heavy 8.5/10

Aero p2 strippers - super comfy, great protection, a little bulky 8/10

Asics gel gully shoes - very comfortable good grip, stunning looks 10/10

Batssss

Duck and run LE - absolute gun, amazing pick up for a 2.11 hit more 6s this season with it than ever before. 9.5/10

Redwood artisan LE - goes well, slightly hard pressed, started to open up, after I had the handle repaired, great pick up weighs about 2.9 will be looking to get rid of it soon. 8.5/10

Mongoose mmi3 premium - a good laugh, absolute gun, very softly pressed played straight out the packet, love it as well as all my teammates do! 10/10 does what it was bought for hits the ball a long way and is good fun.

B3 butterfly DB1 shape - good pick up, seems to be going very well, little too much concaving for my liking but it keeps the weight down, purple stickers look great, great extended middle goes from the stickers down to near the toe. Can't wait to get I to the nets with it 9/10

So that's my kit that I had this year, think I have covered all of it, go ahead and get your lists up here, any questions or views feel free to ask!

love the look of the maverick pads

ill give a quick review havent used too much kit this season.

helmet

ayrtek acis and recently swapped in a titanium grill. really like once i got the strap sorted. will be sticking with it for a while 9/10

softs

puma calibre 4000 pads. absolutely love them good protection nice snug fit lightweight and 2 straps so really comfy. a real shame that the straps are way to long so i tucked them in and have now destroyed the strap so they need to be replaced this winter 8/10

salix pod one gloves for the start of the season bought of fattus as they were cheap good protection and comfy to wear 7/10

salix pod players my first with pittards leather and i really like it. only used in one game as my season has finished. 9/10

slazenger xlite lower body protector good bit of kit once i got the straps in the right place it didnt move wish i could find a second set but they seem to not make them anymore. 8/10

bats

gn nemesis bought it from IJC last year. loved the look and design used it in the nets a went well. i got a few low scores in a row so obviously it was the bats fault so haven't used it in the last 2 months. it will be my match bat again next season. i have just bought a lighter weight one to see if changes anything 8/10

mongoose cor3 bought off the forum for £50 used it for the second half of the season and goes nicely and got a decent amount of runs 9/10

mongoose mmi3 used in the lms where they also have short boundaries so suited each other really well. scored my fastest 50 of the season from 33 balls 9/10

Here I go!

Helmets:

AdiTek raw - light, comfy, great visibility, best protection on the market (statement 100% true at time of purchase).
Sadly I didn't score many runs first half of the season so it was replaced by an old masuri I was more familiar with.
Rating 9/10

Masuri club shell (stock and modified form - see separate thread) with Ti Grille

Stock - masuri looks, fairly lightweight, less padding than model up.
Rating 6/10
Modified - stuck the padding from a slaz ultimate in there, same feel as more expensive model. As it's effectively cost 2 helmets to get this feel it's not exactly cost effective.
Rating 6.5/10

Masuri test titanium
Lightweight, classic look, familiar! Not the best protection any more but it's served me well.
Rating 8/10

Pads:

Online stockist blank
£25 on there at the moment. Small mens, good protection, straps padded and not too long. Not highest quality materials but very light. Come off 2nd best vs diving on a sports hall floor. Good value for money.
Rating 7/10

GM 808 pads (2013 I think)
Decent protection and classic look. However, straps long enough to mark the boundary with and heavier than other options (may be different of this years model). Great value at £30 though
Rating 8/10

GM Original LE Pads (2014)
Great look, great feel, great protection, straps padded and not too long, best pads I've ever owned (even though they squeaked a bit!)rating 9/10

Bats

GM Icon 404
Nice pickup for weight, decent ping from new and generous sweetspot.
Sold as it was surplus to requirements when I had a clear out.
Rating 7/10

GM Six6 404
My current weapon of choice. Great ping, big sweetspot.
Sadly it required a repair by me but is holding up well.
Rating 8.5/10

GM six6 404
Bought from Chad. Grainy & well balanced. Used once and had good ping. Will only improve with more use.
Rating 7/10

GM flare 606
Great pickup, nice performance and bargain price.
Decided it was too light for me so sold to Chad!
Rating 8/10

Hammer Fyrre
Was stripped bare and naked while I used it, decent performance and surprisingly good pickup for its shape. I will say I'm glad I didn't pay RRP for it!
Also now in chads hands after I decided the bat wasn't working properly!
Rating 7/10

Gloves

Neon
Great protection, great price and pittards. Colour may not be everyone's cup of tea. I've decided I prefer calf leather to pittard.
Rating 8/10

GM original (2013)
Great protection and very comfy. Louder colour scheme than this years model.
Rating 8/10

GM 909 D3o
Great protection, sausage fingers and great comfort. Very bright!
Rating 8.5/10

GM original (2014)
Great protection, classy and understated design and comfy from the packet. Slightly large fitting but do the job well.
Rating 9/10

Ok so this is some of the gear I have used in a minimum of three games this year and my thoughts

Helmet - Masuri test ti grill been my lid of choice for years and for me perfect 10/10

Pads

Salix pod players - light, minimal look with top top protection levels. Pricey I know but in my mind some of the best pads around 10/10

Gray Nicolls oblivion test - again top pad super light the only thing is the front pad seems to move round my leg a little no matter how I set the straps. 9/10

HH pads used all last season and start if this season now used to net with but for the money top top pad perfect fit and tote tigon is tops 10/10

GM Original LE - just superb offer arguably the best comfort along with pod players pads 10/10

Gloves

Salix pod players - as with the pads just amazing pittard palm feels as good today as when I first wore them hardly worn at all and sweat control is superb 10/10

GN oblivion test - men's size but come up like a youth superb comfort and lining on inside is excellent leather palm lasts well have 2 pairs there that good 10/10

HH gloves like the design or not for the cheapest of any glove I own they do a great job palms last very well started to fall apart now and again used to net with had a season and half use 9/10

GM original & 808 gloves - size wise as a men's glove there huge the original gloves are very good but the 808 feels bulky and quite heavy protection wise can't fault either but no pittard on these and 808 palms seem to have zero sweat resistance. Original 8/10 and 808 6/10

Bats

Salix SLX just an immense bat and the best from my point of view of the new bats this year I have used. 2.10 but feels like a feather and huge middle, has a slightly different shape to stock bat 10/10

HH grade 1 was my match bat last year, winter nets and beginning of this year scored over 3000 runs in its life and will be remembered as my favourite bat of all time at present 10/10

GN oblivion 5star select - used 3-4 times and will be a real gun. Grains are amazing for a 5 star hand picked by Jake. Balance a pick up is as good as anything. A little soft so marked easily 9/10

GM 6six original - for a top end bat is hard pressed used last 2 weekends and middle is awesome but around it still needs to fully get going middle is quite long but at present not in league of the other bats 7/10

Salix Torque S3 - lightest bat in my collection at 2.7 finished with grips etc and 37mm edges used in 3 Sunday games and a great bat to bat with for long periods middle is very good but is a timing bat as weight doesn't allow massive six's 9/10

Ton power blaster - bought from Asad in winter and used early on during Sundays. Performance was unreal but it was so soft it just fell apart. Was passed onto a lad in the two's for minimal amount and after 12 games looks like its 4 seasons old with all the cracks etc but middle is superb 8/10

Most of my others have just been netted with and used by a few others or are still waiting there first use.

Shoes - as always Asics gell gully just amazing comfort and protection as taken a few on the toe and all fine. Lasts so well they will be going into 3rd year with just new studs 10/10

Stretton fox thigh guards - personally just didn't get on with them, didn't feel comfy although protection as all know is amazing but for me just not great 6/10

Aero P2's -exact opposite of the SF in terms of fit and had no problems protection wise for me that's why there most players preferred choice 10/10

Bag Ton Duffle - just excellent, stands up fits batting gear, keeping gear and whites no fuss and padded straps are so comfy and change from £40 so 10/10

Helmet

Ayrtek Raw: I've been using Ayrteks for a few years and last year acquired this. I know some don't like them, but as someone for whom the large masuri was a bit small, this is great. Fits perfectly (especially with the ACIS system) and the Grille is a suitable distance from my chin. This is an incredibly light helmet, and with the grille setting I use, there is no way the ball is going through. My only complaint is the little foam pads for sweat absorption no longer stick to the interior and I may have to invest in a Halo. Otherwise, a great helmet. 9/10 until I find a better way of dealing with sweat!

Gloves

GM Original LE 2013: Bought in the SD sale for about £20 last year. These are the modern and not sausage style and offer great protection and are extremely comfortable. I find the GM modern gloves to be quite large and these are no exception, meaning the fit me perfectly. I've worn them in every LMS game I've played and they've relegated my Newbery SPS1 Camo gloves to the spare pair I lend to people. What's not to like! 9/10 and recommended to anyone.

Hunts County Revolution: Bought as part of a set with the Custom LB Buterfly Turbo Revolution Bat and Pads. I'd never used Hunts gloves before and these surprised me. On Saturdays I'd been using the 2011 GM Original LE D3O modern style gloves, and these were far more comfortable, replacing the GMs completely. Excellent fit, comfort and protection, again for a guy with big hands. I think these better the LMS gloves, but only just, so I give them 9.5/10

Batting Pads

Puma Iridium 6000: These replaced by Puma Pulse 6000 pads following the facing material splitting on them. As you can tell, I like the "stormtrooper" look. These have a very snug fit and wrap tightly around the leg, meaning that running in them is a pleasure, and I don't struggle with the knee rolls catching on each other (a problem I had with GM 909 D3O pads). As a larger chap, I've never had a problem with straps being too long, and these fit that bill perfectly too. As with all modern, top end puma pads, you can stand and face high pace balls with no concerns - the protection is really top notch. Due to the levels of protection, whilst they are light (read about 650g-700g per pad, they are not the lightest on the market. I have no issue at all in recommending this type of pads (although this model is no longer available) to anyone who likes the look, but they are very much a "marmite" pad. I love Marmite too. 8.5/10

Hunts County Revolution: Having not invested in "traditional"-ish pads for a long time I took a punt on these. I was pleasantly surprised again. They have a wonderful fit, with a great knee locator in the knee roll that makes them feel like they fit like gloves! One of the benefits of the fit is the lack of protrusion at the side of the knee roll, making running no issue. Extremely comfortable. As you'd expect with top end pads, they also have excellent protective qualities. Slightly heavier than the Pumas, but that's what you get with cane, these are also Top Pads! I think these are slightly better than the Pumas (and I never thought I'd say that about traditional shaped pads) so I give them 9/10.

Bats

Gray Nicolls Dynadrive LB Custom: This is my number one bat. It was bought off Vitas and is fabulous. Pick up, performance, style. What's not to love? It is right up there with the TK Custom that I own as one of the best bats that I've ever owned and will continue to be my number one until it breaks. 11/10

Aldred Velocity Butterfly LB: Bought as a wet weather bat to make sure that I didn't damage my Dynadrive in damp conditions. Obviously a nice enough bat, but not as good as the Dyna. Being a Velocity it has a slightly heavier pick up and lower middle, but it pings well. I think the finish in reality versus the impression in the pictures isn't quite so good comparatively, but it is still good. Used in the nets pre-season very effectively and it had one outing in wet weather in LMS. I have to admit that I'm not as in love with this one as the Dynadrive, and I think it probably only merits a 6.5/10 and I think this is probably due to the shape not suiting me as well as a slightly higher middle on a LB does. It's still class, just not top of the class.

Hunts County Turbo Revolution LB Butterfly: This was acquired because I always loved Hunts bats, especially the Reflex and the Eclipse. The idea that I could get a bigger bat with a hole also stirred me and it does have a lovely shape. Bought as part of a package with the gloves and pads, this has been knocked in and netted with. It's a very nice bat and feels large for its weight. While I know that the stickers are not to everyone's taste, I'm not unhappy with them. Based on the conversation with Jake after it was made, the cleft has probably just about dried out by now. When hitting the ball, you do get a slightly higher pitched sound due to the hole, but it certainly doesn't affect the middle. In terms of Value for Money, this is right up there with the Aldred and B3 butterfly models, but I rate this one better than the Aldred. For me it's an 8.5/10.

Shoes

Adidas SL22 Rubber: These were bought for the LMS tournament which we play on artificial pitches. Excellent grip, even on damp fields and reasonably comfortable. The sole could provide a bit more cushioning, but otherwise a decent pair of shoes for 20 over cricket. 8/10

Nike Lunar Dominate: Acquired to replace a pair of Asics Gel Strike Rate that had had it at the SD offer price, these had an RRP that was more than the Asics. I was disappointed. Walked around in them without spikes to break them in, but after the first Saturday game, I came to realise that in comparison to the Asics, the sole was rubbish and really didn't provide enough cushioning. The upper support was not an issue though. I'm 6'5 and weigh 15 stone, and these simply weren't good enough, leading to sore feet. They were relegated to back up pair and the slightly older Asics back up pair became my Saturday shoes. This is a pair of shoes that I really don't rate and wouldn't recommend to anyone. for me they are a 3/10.

Asics Gel Strike Rate: These are my go to shoe and have been for a number of years (since they've been around really). I prefer the pre-2013 edition and there is nothing not to like with them. Comfort, support and simply, a great shoe. 10/10

Bats
Warsop Platinum - played fine, gun of a middle when I find it although its slightly too low and its maybe an ounce or two too light 7/10
Newbery B52 Players - again played fine, little heavy for me but our opener has been smashing it everywhere with it. Currrently negotiating its sale to said opener 7/10

Gloves
GM 808 - nice and light, adequate protection, durable palms. Would buy again 8/10

Pads
GM 808 - not got on with these at all, standard mens size seems a little large (I'm 5'9 and not had any issues before), straps are miles too long (and not padded) and they are quite inflexible. Will not be using these next year and tbh would probably not buy them again, even in small mens.

Extras
Strippers P2 - on to their 3rd season but holding up well, no complaints 10/10
Kookaburra Spikes - Not as good as the Asics I've had in the past but light weight, flexible and comfortable. 7/10
GN 100 Bag - Like the idea of having a bag with a large section and a pocket or 2 for clothes but missed not having somewhere to place shoes and top pocket could have been bigger. Will most likely swap over winter for one of the new back pack style duffles. 5/10

The 808 is a fantastic range, especially given the price points, really pleased to see positives about the gloves, slightly confused by the pad comments.

I'm not sure there are too many sub £50 pads out there with padded straps. I can't get my head round the sizing issue either. They are marketed as a more compact pad, and whilst it is true that most of GM's pads have increased in size recently (i am a mens in most brands but small mens GM OLE pads are probably slightly too big for my liking) the 808's do not follow this trend.

Thats just how i see it though, you've had a whole season wearing them so i of course take your comments on board.

Used only 2 bats all season,

Aldred Silver sov - Scored my first 50 with this bat in first match of the season, but few games on I realized the bat is 2-3 centimeters narrower than the standard width, I couldn't get over this fact unfortunately , I wish I never figured it out.

B3 db 2 butterfly - Scored 400 runs at 26 avg using this bat for the rest of the season, It is still very hard and not quite ready compared to some of the bats my team mates have, but it has a well spread sweet spot so I'm going to stick with this next year as well. I quite like the light pickup on this bat.

Not sure if it is the butterfly effect or the finishing from B3 but after opening the batting with this bat for all the games I played , it still has a very clean face . There are no cherries , not even light ones . Bat looks practically new and opposition asked me if it is a new bat in the last game of the season.

Edit - 2-3 mm, not cm, embarrassing mistake.

going from top to bottom  :D all kit either used as net or match kit for majority of the season unless stated

Helmet - slazenger ti, identical to the masuri ti, managed to grab it for 25 quid from SD last year. Id say my biggest ever bargin getting it 100 quid below the sold price in some shops. Perfect for me, super light, i feel very safe in it and vision is not a problem. Although i have only ever had masuri/this helmet so cannot compare on vision. The interior is different to my old masuri but even though i have stood up alot more keeping this year (hence wearing the helmet more) i would say that the slazenger 'swoppa' bands have held sweat a lot better than my masuri that i had. It seriously ponged at the end of the season last year :D 10/10

Stretton Fox arm guard/sweat band - george had done these before, but not often so was a slightly custom request. I would say he is the best person i have dealt with when ordering something online, i could seriously not find you one fault. The product was exactly what was asked for. Havent used it heaps this year however when i have it has been comfy. Been directly hit on it once by a ball and didnt feel a thing. It took a few nets and a while of bending the material to get it to fit. But a trusty part of kit bag 9/10

Bulldog 2013 split finger gloves - bought from Kieron who was another business owner who was a pleasure to deal with. A bargain for the price i payed, look good, feel good and protect perfectly well. Although i have worn them since the start of the outdoor season including nets i would've preferred the palms to wear a little better but i cannot complain too much. They come up like small mens which is perfect for me as i have small hands. Not going to set the world alight, but when youre not even thinking about your gloves i think thats a good thing 8/10

Aero p2 strippers - not much to say with these, most of us know the score, perfect protection unless youre facing 80 ish mph. fit well, a little bulky which is their only downside but great value and wearing fantastically. Finishing their 3rd season with me now and never even needed a wash :D 8/10

Bulldog 2013 pads - part of the bundle i got from  Kieron. I really love the look of the traditional pad and i think these look great with the front all cane. Unfortunetly i am not the tallest and i would say these are pretty  big pads. However for the price i paid they are fantastic and great value. Protection cannot be faulted and the inside is very well made and comfy, also the paddest straps are excellent for a short enthusiast like me :Dbut as suspected with cane pads not the most flexible. If they fit me better these would be rated higher but for me they are a 7.5/10

Asics gel advance 4 spikes - As expected from asics proper quality. £90 but worth the investment because if you wanted to keep them these could last you a serious amount of time. My second season with them now but if i gave them a quick wash they would look almost new. Very comfy and no problem with wear apart from the studs which will happen to every boot after 2 seasons. Although cricket spikes genreally dont feel that comfy to me, these are by far the best ive had 9/10

Gray nics maverick players 2.9 10ish grains bought from soulman this was a seriously well performing bat. it had great ping and a superb pick up. I would say the second best bat that i have owned, unfortunetly you may realise i am talking in the past tense  :( the bat broke unfortunately it was very soft so maybe as expected 7/10, purely because im bitter i couldnt have used it for longer

SS gladiator a 50 quid replacement from a player from a few years ago at our cllub. 2.10 but excellent pick up and balance supurb middle, off centre shots a little dodgey but a bat i feel will never break and have great trust in which i feel is most important when going out into the middle 8/10

2013 GM original keeping gloves these gloves are excellent, another brand new ebay bargin at 25 quid :o didnt even need breaking in they were that flexible, a nice long cuff and good grip. no real wear to palms so they have lasted well, cant fault them 9/10

aero p1 keeping inners a real specialist bit of kit from aero. bought from ijc's ebay shop a good investment. 20 odd quid is a lot for inners but worth the investment. comfyer than any other inner but not bulky at all and i dont sweat in them. i may buy a few pairs if they ever stop producing them 10/10
