Go to a cricket shop and pick up as many bats as you can. Pick the one that feels right in your hands.

Surely kippax can sort one for you

Mate, if you've got £250 and want the best bat you can get for the money then contact Paul Aldred and get him to make you up a players grade to your specifications. You won't go wrong.

At that price point, I also agree that Aldred would be very hard to go past. His bats are absolute guns and his service is brilliant.

Haven't had a Newberry or L&W so can't comment.

However, I've got an Aldred Sovereign Gold that I picked up off a team mate. It's a good bat. 2'9 fully dressed (including a toe guard that I fitted) and has a great pick up. Bat isn't even half a season only and plays like a well seasoned veteran.
I've had a big craving for a GM since I was at school and after 12 or 13 years, I picked up a GM Flare cheap. School boy nostalgia maybe, but I'm waiting to see how it opens up to see if the Aldred or the GM get the nod for the game bat this year. At the moment, the Aldred it winning hands down on performance.

You could also consider H4L.  I absolutely love my Hattori which has a lowish middle.

Paul is too good at balancing bats mate. My mate, usually uses 2'10 ish but Paul has done such a sensational job that it picks up more like a 2'7.

He found he was through his shots too early. I usually use a 2'8 pick up so its perfect for me.

I would like to pick out my own bat so it'd  be a bit  hard for me to get down to to H4L  in Kent from Leeds over 4 hour drive.

Hi Qasim,

I live in US, I couldn't pick my clefts, not as lucky as you guys are. But I am using a Laver reserve for past 2 seasons 2 10 in original weight , its took its time to open up and once it did it is a belter and its gaining weight, guess its about 2 14 now as others have mentioned here. Ordered a Aldred Butterfly. when I talked to Aldred regarding my Laver getting a bit heavy, not able to time my square cut or for that matter anything pitched short outside off, Paul just said one word i,e he knows what i was after and sent me a 2 9 - 2 10 Aldred Silver, I am still knocking it as also season is over for us here, but initial impression its picks up like dream. looks like its going to be good once its opens up probably midway through next season.

I would suggest take a look at Aldred Butterfly 1 which is as good or might be better of the shelf grade 1 bats and you can save about 80 quids from your Budgeted price

Will do mate. Yh I've  seen some of the butterfly bats and they've got really good  straight  grains. I'll have a hard choice to make
