So, this beast just arrived in the post yesterday... (Second on the left)






Compared to the screw on mallet (605g) and the other 2 mallets, which weigh around 400g, this thing is an absolute monster! (945g) I had to oil it with linseed oil, as the craftsman leaves it in its natural state and doesn't finish his works with varnish or anything. It really is a very beautifully crafted mallet, really chuffed

He also provided a very insightful sheet of information about wood in general, the construct of the mallet and how to take care it.




Can't wait to use this! Will save me a lot of time, seeing as I tend to have a few bats to knock in at all times!

Should you not be weighing just the head... Why does the weight of the handle matter ?

Does the head feel a lot more substantial than the GN deluxe mallet ?

The actual weight of the head is more than the GN Deluxe mallet itself. I think it's probably heavier than the 605g mallet itself!

No you're not expected to take the mallet apart. I was just pointing out that the mallets with a longer handle will be heavier but that doesn't translate into impact onto the bat i.e. You weren't comparing apples to apples.

well... more weight in the handle is still swinging towards the bat. also a longer handle gives more leverage which will definitely give more of an impact force!

Do mallets not all have handles? Did I not weigh ALL of the mallets with the handles? Proportionally, the longer handle is offset by the increase in weight of the head. The mallet itself is more than double the weight of the normal mallet, so I really do highly doubt that all of that extra weight will be in the handle or just in the head. And yes, longer handle = more leverage, thus impact onto the bat. Just like saying that the Mongoose MMi3 is wrong, as the weight of the blade is less than that of a conventional bat. (Normally) In that case, you can't compare 2 bats with different weighted handles!

Haha don't expect to see it back if you do! Just going to start offering oiling and knocking in as a local service. Means I don't have to buy so many bats just to get the excitement of seeing new willow every other week!

I went with the oak mallet at 765g. Couldn't justify the extra cost, to then find out that my moms partner could make an lv mallet for a bottle of wind and a curry!!

Above all Les Ross is a thoroughly nice man.

I really do recommend these mallets, just need to be sensible using them.

Mine is fantastic.

Anyone after one should just get in touch with him and he will customise it to your requirements.

I was second person after Tai/BlankBats on this forum to own a Lignum Vitae mallet and/or to get it from Les Ross, so I must say I'm extremely pleased. Mine is pretty massive as opposed to this but serves me extremely well and knocks the bats extremely well.

You'll love it Chad, would feel heavy initially but after few weeks of use, you'll develop your knocking skills and more importantly forearms!

One thing I would have gotten done on mine and I see yours same like mine is that I would have made one head round (like Gray Nicolls mallet). But it could be just me.

I've just ordered a LV from Les off ebay. Really nice man to deal with over email. Hope to get it next week. Post a pic when it arrives. Very excited.
