New GM Flare...
« on: November 10, 2009, 06:57:32 PM »

Hiya chaps, must debate about the flare, its shape etc!

Well here it is, its a high middled bat and i cant really describe the profile, the new stickers from GM are fabulous.

Spec:

13 Straight grains about 1/4 - 1/3 heartwood on the outside edge.

Weight: 2.11

Edges: 30mm

Thanks to the great service at GM obviously they could not repair my purist so sent a new bat out to me.

1) Whats the pick up like on that bat?
2) Would you recommend the new GM (compared to the old style)?

I got this for the purist i returned that was broken so many thanks to GM as you have probally guessed i like the lower middle of the grizzly, hence having a few but i will possibly sell this one as its not really what i use.

Anyhow, thanks for a more informed post.

I remember you posting pictures about the purist, and yeah the bat seems to have a high middle on it, but i suppose players prefer different types of bats!
Im sure you will get your moneys worth if and when you sell it, because it looks great!

Re: the pickup.... well to me its a very light pick up, i havent put my normal grip configuration on it yet but that will lighten the pick up even more. Funny thing is i actually like a heavy pick up, strange but we are all different.

Would i recommend them to the old GM's? Yes i would, this is certainly better in terms of willow quality and wood density for the weight than the purist i had. The shape is one i haven't seen before and to be honest i am itching to have a hit with it.

I will update  you as soon as i can get a n but that could be a while with work, indoor league etc.

Yeah the shape is different. I am guessing now that GM have done this so they have covered all bases this year, as they have bats with:

the high middle and no concaving (the flare)
the high middle and concaving (the icon)
the low middle and concaving (the hero)
the low middle and no concaving (the apex).

A very clever move in my eyes. Im glad you are pleased with the bat mate, the GM service is very good and I know the feeling about new bats, itching to have a go with them, but if you have a net with it, people dont pay as much. I found this out the hard way!

To be honest with you craig i am not in this game to make money, i can do that outside cricket.

If the bat doesn't suit me i take great pleasure in passing them on to a junior player and watching them do well, i have at the last count 7 bats so some have to go but i may auction them off for help for heroes or a similar good cause.

Gm have done very well in covering all bases, re: apex i have seen one in the flesh at Owzat yesterday and the flat triangle bit at the bottom is not very pronounced but it does have slight concaving.

im not sure but thanks craig, its good every now and again to help a talented junior, i know what its like being a young lad looking up to first team players thinking wow all that gear. My uncle was a very good league cricketer and he passed on some of his old equipment to me and that basically got me started and 12 years later i love the game and have many friends that i have met and many great experiences travelling all over the world.

Think every now and again about helping a young lad and its great to watch them develop.

Thanks for the kind words.

Sorry guys i know this is about the GM flare (which i think looks great) but i cant help thinking that the GM Apex reminds me of a salix i used to own . . .a Fera! I think the triangle at the bottom of Apex is much more pronounced than that of the Fera but i wonder if its designed for the same reason? For those of us who like a lighter bat and maximum bat speed?

Seedy. . .is the Flare as skinny in the toe as it looks in your pics?
