My Lords sale bats have arrived
« on: October 27, 2014, 11:00:08 PM »

So after having a shocking weekend where I have managed to write my car off I have come home to find 3 lovely packages waiting for me. These are the bats that I ordered from Lords during there sale at silly prices and I must say that I'm very happy at the quality. The x181 was bought blind and the TON and Chase I spoke to the guy in the shop about.

Gray Nicolls X181 - this is simply huge and is 2.8 dead on. The profile is lovely and is my favourite of the GN range to be honest with its high spine and massive middle. The blade seems a little two toned in the pics but isn't that way with the naked eye. 41mm edges and 6 straight and even grains. Tapping an old ball it responds very well like all GN seem to at the moment.

TON Max Power Classic - this thing is a pocket rocket and performance will be amazing on this bat 39 mm edges and a skinny oval handle with a single snake grip. This is 2.9 in weight and honestly tapping an old ball the sound is amazing and it flies off the blade and at £90 is a bargain tbh

Chase FLC - stunning piece of wood with 10 lovely even grains and the handle feels perfect in my hands with an oval handle and single spiral grip. 39mm edges with a low swell position. I have never used a chase and tbh the ones I have seen I have never been impressed with but this is a lovely bat. The balance is super and its 2.8 bang on again looks lovely in the flesh and I can honestly say if I had seen this In a shop I would have been tempted at the full £300 price let alone the bargain price Lords were selling at.

The only problem now is looks like I'm going to have to have a big clear out to pay for a new car. Anyone in the mean time here are some pics.

Lovely bats! Remember seeing the x181 when I bought mine earlier on this year and was a tough one. They have some lovely bats in there and yet another 3 beauties for your collection  :D

Proper bargains. Loving that Chase - I've always been a fan of them, I think you'll find you'll get on well with it.

Highly impressive trio of bats there Chris. I was tempted by a Ton, guy on the phone said that they had quite a few in stock. A little disappointed that yours turned up before mine, hoping today will be the day.

Impressive bats for the weight. They all look heavily concaved? Get the rubber band on them.

It almost looks like the edges of the TON go back up. It has been concaved and the wood ramps back up to give a bigger edge or is it a trick of the light?

Great bargains, I did fancy a chase, but they had all gone by the time I had got through.
Got some pictures through of a purist and a zona on saturday. The weights were supposed to quickly follow. Still waiting!!.

This is what I call the 'gull wing'. Asian batmakers especially, looking for ways of making bigger and bigger edges, due to people seeing very softly pressed pro bats and wanting similar - though batmakers will not 'waste' low density, softly pressed willow on the masses due to scarcity and impact on returns/refunds due to damage.

The 'gull wing' is the only way bigger edges can be achieved from higher density willow WITHOUT increasing the overall weight of the bat.

I have to admit, the more I know about bats, the more I consider big edges just to be a waste of wood (IF concaving has to be pushed to the extremes).

The GN is the biggest of the 3 bats in terms of edge size. The X-181 has a very high spine and this was the same on another x181 I owned that went to a team mate last season. The only benefit to a bit edge is the confidence element to me the sciences will say it's wood mass behind the ball and the marketing tells you value for off centre shots. But for me it's about confidence plain and simple I like big chunky bat. Personally I also would prefer minimal concaving as this gives me more mass behind the ball but following a few years of painful wrists the weight of bats I'm using 2.9 max in the main means something has to give.

A clear demonstrator of this for me is that one of the best bats at my club is a Newbery Mjolner SPS that's a few seasons old and the original profile. Many have used it and rave about it. Iv used it a couple of times in nets and I just hate it in my hands it just plays on my mind.
