New B3 DW2 shape bat
« on: October 29, 2014, 06:46:32 PM »

I've eventually got round to doing a review of my second ever bat from B3 which I actually bought at the end of the summer.
Bit of background first. I was after a bat that looked similar in profile to Joe Root's Six6 (which looks pretty different to the standard shape). When I saw Dave's DW2 shape I thought this pretty much did the job so I enquire with Dave and then Streaky about getting one done from a low density butterfly cleft. I wanted it to be about 2lb 9oz.
Streaky got back to me very promptly to say he didn't really have anything suitable so I kept in touch for a week or so and eventually decided to go for a one stripe Custom B3 with a density of 376. Streaky said this should come in at around my weight, maybe a bit over. We then discussed final details over the 'phone and went ahead with the order. I think Streaky gave me a pretty good deal being a returning customer.
The bat arrived about about 2 weeks after first contact and I am very pleased with it. As you can see from the photos it is a great profile, basically like a 1271 but with a duck bill toe. It arrived weighing 2lb 9oz exactly and having added a scuff sheet it is a little over this. It doesn't have huge edges but the spine is massive and there is no concaving - it is very big for the weight.
It has a great oval handle and picks up beautifully. This is probably down to the weight higher up the blade as you'd expect with the 1271. It has 6 pretty straight grains and a few blemishes on the face, as one would expect from a one stripe cleft, but it taps up really well and feels great in the hands.
Very happy with the see-through, black stickers and will probably add a white/black GM ripple grip as love see grips.
The service and advice from both Dave on here and Streaky was excellent and I would recommend them to anyone. I would also recommend the DW2 shape as I think it is a great mix between the traditional and modern shapes.
Enjoy the pics.

That is a cracking shape mate and lovely looking bat. My DW1 is a 1 stripe low density cleft and I'm more than happy with the performance.

Another great bat from B3 and congratulations to my old mucka Dave designing his two shapes - praise where praise is due, the certainly rival of not better the Docs 3 shapes (DB shapes).

I'm hoping Dave will sell the DW2 he had made in butterfly, is truly a gorgeous bat even with pink stickers

Have you a measurement of the edge size at shoulder, highest point and toe? What is spine height?

Cheers

My mistake. Meant 'one stripe' cleft. Have corrected now I think. Apologies.

It's a lower density cleft with fewer grains and maybe blemishes that they couldn't sell as a £400 bat - don't think B3 get many, Dave or Streaky will be able to explain better.

Definitely a bargain if you don't mind having a slightly ugly bat

To be fair the collaboration was me and streaky as alluded too it is basically the 1271 scaled down so people can have it in appropriate weights and get it in lower grades so people could Have a similar shape but less.

I do that the original sfumato  which was written down as show in the forum streaky just did his thing and he presto

Glad your happy I love the shape and I know for sure there a 3 stripe beauty in the showroom for sale at 2-12 I think

Ooold thread, I realise, but I've been digging about the 1271 as it intrigues me.

I like that it's been said it's the best shape for coverage and balance.

If I ordered an actual 1271, it would mean the weight was already set? Assuming I just want a 1 stripe so it's a certain density, the shape is going to mean it's automatically what: 2,12?

Have I understood it right?

Also if anyone knows about the 1271, where would you say the middle was? mid? mid/low?

The 1271 is simply the profile number. The dimensions of the bat are fixed but the weight will depend on the density of the willow. I think it's been quoted that an "average" density of 400 means the 1271 profile will weigh 2'15. Since every 10 drop in density equals 1oz you need a 370 density cleft for a 2'12 bat. Alternatively you can pay for a custom version with slightly smaller edges/spine. Streaky/Dave will give you a proper answer.

No nick you hit the nail on the head 1271 is a monster coverage wise and the calculations you talk about are right.

1271 has set dimentions which can be changed

The middle is all over the bat to it equal coverage nature but extends low and is high up to the sticker

So say I wanted the actual unchanged 1271, but in a 2,12/3,13, would that lower density be available in a 1 stripe? Or is it only the higher grades that you get lower densities?

We get a few in but it wouldn't need to be that low it 2-15 and a half at 400 so you would need around 375 to make it at 2-13 pal I can find out see if we have anything in that low mate in that grade
