Here's the before and after on my knackered SS Jumbo. Bought it for very little from an auction in Suffolk. Grains not great and it will never be a thing of beauty.

Still needs oiling and grip and new back sticker, but it hits the ball well and may even stay in one piece...

By the way, does anyone else agree that this iconic bat had the worst ever sticker design? Looking through old photos, seems like half of the Essex squad used them in 70s/80s

Thanks, no nothing extra beyond the SS Patent reinforced toe, which seems to stop the blade cracking right through to the back. We'll see if it holds together.

I can't agree on the stickers. I love the clarity of them - no mistaking the bat anywhere round the boundary, when Viv or Clive Rice et al were making mincemeat of the bowlers. Then again,as a boy I suppose I accepted the then-current look of bat stickers as the right way for the bat to look (sorry, poor explanation).

Great job on the refurb and good luck in your sticker search.SS re-introduced a kashmir willow version of the Jumbo recently, so stockers have been re-produced in recent years.

The toe - there was a small piece missing - have you filled it with sawdust and glue or did you put a piece of wood in there?

I actually rather likes the stickers although there may be an element of nostalgia in that.

I think the garish efforts in some modern bats are the worst I have seen

Thanks. Yes, I first removed the expanding gorilla glue from the hole at the toe because this is quite soft and brittle. Then I refilled it with gorilla wood glue mixed with sawdust. Then resanded it. I'll give it a good bash over the summer and see if the filler cracks or stays sound.

Can't say I honestly hate the Jumbo sticker. There's a lot of nostalgia there from when I first played in the early 80's. But I do prefer say the SS Turbo 333 that Gooch wielded for looks.
