Hey guys, I am making a bat for myself for a school project. I was just wondering if any of you could give me some bat specs if I give you some details about myself. 

• 14 years old
• 158cm tall
• Medium build
• Favourite shots: pull, leg glance, slog
• Worst shots: drive, cut, sweep
• Home ground: large and slow outfield, consistent bounce, not too high
• Current bat: SS Ton Professional Harrow 2.5 years old
• Performance is good, main problem is pickup
• State cricketer looking to go further
• Will be using the bat seasonally, as in 5 months a year
• Usually an aggressive opening batsmen, sometime bat down the order
• Most common form of dismissal: bowled from lifting head up or getting caught in front of the wicket

It'll be some investment to start making a bat, not too sure if it's worth the investment for just 1 bat. You can easily go through the topics here and select a mid middle or a high middle profile which may ease your pickup problems. I would suggest go visit a local bat maker and tell them about your project and ask for their help and guidance in making a bat in their own shed. This way you won't have to buy the tools, will get some insights into selecting a bat/cleft and will get some guidance in making a bat. I hope this all can be done with some small fees which would save you some money over buying set of tools etc and then procuring a handled & pressed cleft.

As your first bat for a school project I would strongly suggest not getting bogged down with the details you list above. I would suggest instead finding a shape you like and get on with and copying it as close as possible. It's also fairly unrealistic for you at the moment to think of making a bat from scratch and far better to concentrate on shaping and finishing a pre pressed and handled bat. As a school project the shaping and finishing alone would be enough of a challenge I'm sure.
Find a bat maker in your area and ask for a pressed and handled blank bat. I'm sure they will be very happy to help you. I know I would be if you weren't the other side of the world.

Agree obtain a pre handled pressed low grade cleft which you can shape and finished after first establishing what tools and materials you need and what tools are available to you such as vice with soft jaws  drawknife or rasp file block plane spoke shave and If concaving no 4 travisher course medium and fine sandpaper  buffer wax PVA  woodworking glue  (to assist hand binding ) and twine.

Thanks for the input guys. I should've mentioned in the topic post that the cleft I am getting is from Laver and Wood. The project is 8 months long giving me plenty of time to work and research. The cleft doesn't have the handle fitted in. I was just wondering if I could get some help on what shape to make the bat, to suit my needs.
