Sliced thumb with kitchen knife, off-season training interupted!
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:17:14 PM »

Yep,

I was chopping an onion with a very sharp knife and went through my left thumb and thumbnail (my top hand) about 75% of the way through, luckily because it was so near the tip of the thumb, when the knife hit bone it glanced upwards and carried on through flesh but I didn't lose any bone so my thumb will heal back pretty much the same shape, even if my thumbnail might be permanently weird looking.

Naturally, whilst swearing I was thinking - I hope I don't miss too much cricket.

The hospital just glued and strapped the severed bit back to the main thumb and covered it in bandage, they said - take all this off after a week and then just keep it clean.

So it should at least be able to hold itself together after a week.

I'm thinking - might get back in the nets after 2/3 weeks?

But also: Does anyone have any experience of batting with a digit (thumb especially) wrapped up in a bandage inside their gloves to stop friction on a cut on the bat grip? Does this help?

By the forum rules pictures or it never happened!  ;)

And I shattered a finger a couple of seasons ago and returned earlier than advised by the doctor.
I cut an old pair of gloves up the inside of the fingers and taped them together so I didn't have to remove my Bedford splint, which was soft but also moved enough to reduce the friction between my bat and handle somewhat.

For a thumb I'd reccomend a single "digit" bandage, and see how you go.

I broke my finger and nail I'm LMS this season, in that game I batted without a glove because the nail was hanging off. But next games I just put the finger in a glove and it was fine really
