I am shocked and heartbroken to wake up to such terrible news. After all the hoping and praying I can't believe the worst has actually happened. My heart goes out to his teammates and family.

I didn't know Phillip Hughes, I only watched him on tv like most other fans, but I always liked and rooted for him. I'm not sure why.  There was just something about his character, his unorthodox technique that made him seem so appealing. I couldn't wait for him to finally make a spot in the Aussie test team his own and watch his career blossom.

Alas it is not to be. This extraordinarily talented young man has been struck down in his prime while doing the exact thing he would have wanted to be doing at that time. He is gone and now the world of cricket with all it's dramas and nonsense arguments just seems so insignificant.

RIP Phillip Hughes there will never be another like you. You will be missed.

Lets hope that this brings all those crass and often threats of physical harm made to batsmen by bowlers, and dare I say such comments made by certain International Captains, all into sharp perspective.

Really sad to see such a great talent be lost so early. I had just turned 18 when he made his test debut and he was the first proper cricketer that i aspired to be like. I was always made fun of for having an unorthodox technique like Phil, but watching Phil play gave me the belief that i could succeed whilst not looking like the average batsman. I remember taking days off college just to watch him bat. Firmly believed he would've been a legend of international cricket.

I myself suffered a cracked skull a few years back after being hit with a cricket ball and this again, really puts into perspective how dangerous our game can be.

Also thoughts are with Sean Abbott too. Hope he gets all the helped needed.

Needless to say i'm gutted by this.

RIP - Phil Hughes, Legend

As a sign of respect, I have decided not to touch any cricket equipment till next week.

Cancelled from our Sunday game as well.

RIP fellow cricketer.

Everyone else, please ensure you use protective equipment including helmets, no matter what standard you play at. It is just not worth the risk.

Terrible news. Our thoughts go out to family and friends. I must say I have been very impressed with Michael Clarke.

RIP Hughesy, thoughts are with his family. Feel for Abbott as well, having to suffer what happen to Hughes but wasn't his fault at all...

I just can't stop thinking about how tragic this is...

If he had just ducked, or if he had been a fraction slower the ball may have hit shoulder and there is no problem. In some alternate universe Phil hit that ball for four, grinned in satisfaction and carried on batting...but no the 1 in a million happened. That one in a million could happen to anyone of us. Not just batting but fielding too.

It is an old cliche about cricket being a dangerous game but how often do we allow our selves to realize just how dangerous it is. I know I always tell my teamates to watch the ball constantly especially at net practice. Its not about being afraid of the ball it's about having a healthy respect for what that ball can do to your body when it hits you. Anything can happen when playing this game and this incident has brought that home in the most gut wrenchingly brutal way possible.

Poor Abbot, he should feel no guilt but how could he not? I can't even concentrate at work today. This whole thing.....this is just so sad.
