Velocity
« on: December 03, 2014, 02:10:41 PM »

Well with all the sadness in cricket over the last week its taken my mind back to the traditions of cricket and times gone by. As you all know I love the traditional ways of cricket and cricket bat making and I have been thinking for a while to make a purely traditional shape of the velocity as an extra option to the very popular shape we do now. so here it is.
As the Velocity was based on the traditional style bat anyway but just with bigger edges I thought I would give you the option of no concaving and traditional tapered edges. Well the result is in my eyes quite stunning and the feel is quite something to behold. I reckon these will come back into vogue before long I really do they just feel too good not to.

Looks good. In terms of measurements for a specific weight, how does this vary from the original big edge profile ie. how much has come off the edge and onto the spine (which looks very big), or is it just the absence of concaving?

not much comes off the spine height at all, as you know if you have followed me over time that I feel the important part is keeping as much wood in the spine as possible rather than on the edges as that's where you want to hit the ball. This bat is 2-10 feels more 2-8 with the classic shape. it still has an edge that runs tapered to 30mm and 60mm spine height but the back is full if not slightly convex as opposed to concave so you have all the wood concentrated into the middle portion of the bat. it is balanced so well because the handle runs in line with the spine angle which allows for incredible pick ups

Paul, when I get some cash next year this will be my aldred purchase that I promised myself I would make. It's a beautiful bat and very much my cup of tea. I'm not mad on con caving and Hugh edges so for me this hits a warm fuzzy spot

Very classy looking bat. I think there is already a gradual drift back towards traditional profiles with smaller edges and a higher spine. No good for me though, I need all the wood on the edge as that's the place I seem to hit with most regularity!

Do you think the traditional profile helps with the pick up?

Do you think the traditional profile helps with the pick up?

I think it does make it easier to get the pick up. It's something that I have worked on from when I started as I knew what the pick ups were required for the professional game and wanted to reproduce that for the general public not just the top players who have them. I have created that pick up in all our bats its a fine line so get the best out of the bats performance but I think it is certainly easier to attain that with this shape, or at least I found it to be

Lovely bat - I am a huge van of the modern take on the old school shape.
