so far I am up to 7 players who would be better opening bat options to Cook. (not including moeen.)

Hales
KP
Bell
Roy
Carberry
kieswetter
Lumb

possible even the Stig, I would be embarrassed in his shoes.

They'll want to see how he goes in the lions squad first and wont want to push him in to quickly. Assume Bairstow and Kieswetter are ahead of him in the pecking order with regards to keeping.

Sam's a big talent but he's only had one real season of proper first class cricket behind him

Think it was 2? However I think the point here is that there are tons of players who have an amazing season early in their career and then just flop back down to average for the rest of it. Englands selection policy seems to be to allow them to at least get a couple of high quality domestic seasons under their belts beforehand. He's also quite a way down the pecking order as mentioned above naturally with Bairstow and Kieswetter ahead of him.

(1 Hampshire player  ;))

And, to be fair, how nearly was he ruined by it?

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to be said for picking on ability rather than age or experience, but equally there has to be a dividing line.  What has Billings really done to get past the other batsmen on the list (arguments about Cook's technical suitability for the format apart)?

By getting these players involved in the England set up early will enable them to get the best coaching, experience playing against the best and allow them to be comfortable and confident at that level. Pretty sure Jimmy has become one of the top seamers in the world cos of this

Billings called up to replace Kieswetter in 30 man squad.

Woohoooo for him not great for Kieswetter and the eye situation. Hope he sorts that soon.

Wonder if they will say he was sacked or did he step down?

Im hoping someone had the kahunas to have a quiet word with Cooky and suggest that for him to be at his best for the Ashes, missing a World Cup we have no chance in may be a good shout. Therefore think it was a half pushed, half stepped down situation

Morgan is going to captain the WC squad? It should be Root.
