England World Cup Team - ODI
« on: December 07, 2014, 01:43:07 PM »

As England are looking clueless in ODIs i thought it would be a good idea for everyone to share there thoughts on what the team should be for the first match, who should get a chance and where England are going wrong.

What you think

Alastair Cook
Ian Bell
Alex Hales
Eoin Morgan
Joe Root
James Taylor

Moeen Ali
Ravi Bopara

Jos Buttler

Chris Woakes
Stuart Broad

Chris Jordan
James Tredwell
Steven Finn

Expect our squad will look like that (not saying that's what I would want it to look like). Lineup I don't think we can really have a clue til the end of the tri-series.

Dear england selectors

Keep Chris Jordan in the ODI side, not the Test side for now.
Keep Ben Stokes in the Test side, don't have him in the ODI side.

Give Hales a fair chance at the top of the order with Moeen.
Leave Captain Morgan at the helm, today proved we don't need Cook in the ODI side.

For the World Cup please can we go with something like this:

Moeen
Hales
Titch
Rooooot
King Ravi
Captain Morgan
Butler
Jordan
Woakes (Broad if fit)
Treadwell
Finn

Cook
Ali
Taylor
Root
Morgan
Buttler
Rashid
Broad
Woakes
Finn
Anderson

Is what I'd like to see within the realms of reality.

#MooresOut #CookOut

Leave Cook as a test only batsmen. I'd say there is no shame in it but far from it.. I'd value a test match batsmen over any T20 biffer or ODI player anyday.. stick to what you are good at Mr Cook. Moores.. you haven't got a clue, go back to county cricket and stock stealing a living from the clueless ECB

If I were selecting the squad with no preconceptions other than that Pietersen is not available for selection, I'd take:

Moeen Ali
Hales
Taylor
Ballance
Root
Morgan (c)
Bopara
Buttler
Rashid
Broad
Anderson
Finn
Woakes
Footitt
Bairstow

With a view to fielding a "best XI" of:

Hales
Ali
Taylor/Balance
Root
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Rashid
Broad
Finn
Anderson/Footitt

Balance is another, like Taylor, who has immense hitting power that has not really yet been seen in the international game - but both, as well as Root, are proper players so we really don't need the accumulators at all.  Rashid as main spinner is a no brainer when you have Root, Ali and Bopara to share ten overs.  Footitt is quicker than Gurney as the left arm option and...well...who do you think international batsmen would rather face?

Footit was the one that broke Klingers arm in the rl cup this season wasn't he? That was one vicious ball I've got to admit.

His economy of 6.4 for last season is a little bit less flattering however unfortunately :(.

Woakes at his pace at top level  needs to do more with the ball.

Agreed Woakes is just seems a bowling machine bowler at that level I'm afraid.

Maybe so, but (a) its still better than Jade Dernbach and (b) the point here is not about having five line and length bowlers blocking up an end - England need someone who can provide an impact, and Footitt is he best bet I can see in that role. As noted, my side is replete with bowling options - Broad, Finn, Footitt, Bopara, Rashid, Ali, Root - so there is a bit of leeway for him not to bowl a full ten if the hammer is down.

Wash your mouth out with soap and water...? Fielding a "best XI"? What kind of ECB selector are you? "Best" had better mean "the most malleable and likely to toe the ECB line" or your job's on the line son!

Absolutely Tim, Manormanic you are clearly outside cricket and don't know what you are talking about. Most of cricket is played in the dressing room, about how people speak and carry themselves in press conferences and when promoting the latest ECB sponsor.

We all know that actually playing the game (outside the nets, obviously - where everyone is hitting the ball really well) is well down on the list of needs.

Why does Finn keep getting a shout? From what I've seen he's bowling 130k/h.

If Finn isn't bowling 90mph+ then he is useless in my opinion. Doesn't swing it and doesn't have the accuracy. Just cannon fodder bowling at that pace for me.
