Which bat 2015???
« on: December 10, 2014, 09:45:56 PM »

Hi guys, hope you are all well.

I am new on the forum and I am currently looking for a new bat for the 2015 season. This use to be very easy as it was usually as simple as thinking GM, Gray Nics, Kookaburra... and all the other major, well known brands. I bought my current bat 7 years ago from D&P in in Cape Town and was very sceptical about buying outside of the big brands but can safely say my D&P is still going and is by far the best bat I have ever used in my almost 20 years of playing.

Now I'll try and keep it short but I am now finally in the market for a new stick and have been out of the loop on who and what is around in the world of bat making so might need some guidance from all you guys out there.

You may ask why I am not going back to D&P, well I actually ordered a bat from them last year and was bitterly disappointed. The bat was incredibly powerful and had and excellent middle, but it was far from what I asked for profile and weight wise and the finishing wasn't great at all. I have actually been trying to contact them this year as well but unfortunately I have not had a response in over n week.

Ok so what i am getting at is that there are so many new brands out there now and I  don't know where to start, I am looking for a traditional shape as I am not keen on the bulgy new shapes of modern bats with massive edges which a lot of you will think is odd when i say that I am an aggressive middle order bat who likes to take on the bowling and go over the top.

Some say skip the major brands and go to smaller bat makers, some say stick to the big brands as they know what they are doing. To be honest I don't know. I have looked at Chase, Blankbats, D&P, G&M, Hell for Leather and I am nowehere closer to making a decision.

It has to be a longblade, traditional shape with a weight at 2"10-2"11. And it goes without saying playing in the UK it should have a mid to low middle that doesn't disappoint when going big. This is simply discribing my current bat which might make any other bat seem not up to standard. So it might be a matter of asking a bat maker to re-make my current or wait for D&P to get back to me eventually.

Now after all that babble I would like to know what you guys think? Any ideas, suggestions, good recommendations and good experiences with a specific bat maker or retailer, anything that will help my search for my new blade will be hugely appreciated.

Thanks.

How about a Bellingham and Smith? We offer them in the UK and I have some very nice bats in stock right now, and could easily get a long blade for you

We can make what you want in the weight you want to the exact mm in truth and as we are one of the 5 biggest users of clefts in the UK we can safely say we have alot on offer.

There are many good makers out there and great suggestions on here if there any questions i'm more than willing to help you out in a non sales type of way too.

Some great bats around buddy...

Welcome to the forum! Now prepare to empty your wallet!  :D

Seriously, pick any of the boutique manufacturers or suppliers on here, and they'll see you right.
They've got your best interests at heart, and their advice is second to none. They do know what they're talking about. Have a chat, listen to their thoughts and you'll end up with a beautiful tailor-made or hand-picked bat that's perfect for the way you play.

One word of caution though - don't be lulled into believing the old theory that's trotted out again and again that you have to have a low middle bat because of 'slow, low' English wickets. Simply not true.
I never really bought into that; the theory falls apart as soon as it runs into reality - take a look at the profile of some of the bats that are being used by county pros; if it were true, they'd all have low middles.

Crictech have actually done some research into this and have drawn some interesting conclusions. It's a good read:

Have fun on your journey of discovery - and keep us posted!

From experience i would go with h4l who i think offer great value for money or salix which maybe are a bit more pricey though.
Hearing great things about B3 and Aldred whose bats i would love to try. My advice would be to get in touch with Asad at uzi sports, Jake at vitas or Paul at its just cricket. Good luck.

Great response so far guys, thanks a lot. Mattsky, you are so right. My current bat doesn't have a low middle and has worked very well for me. I think because everyone bangs on about the low slow wicket thing that I sort of leaned that way. B3 website got me interested, looks good quality and prices look good too. Can't really be forking out £300-£500 on a cricket bat. So glad there are companies still around with great products at the average club cricketers budget range. lol.

Keep the ideas coming guys, I will be doing some research before I buy so would like any other thoughts.

Talk to Paul Aldred  even if you don't  buy a bat off him you will still learn a lot.
