Well that was fun
In the end I plumped for the Gn1000, and now I've got it home sure I made the right choice. I ummed and ahed in the shop however given the Gn and Ton were the same price, the only advantage I could see with the latter was that it was maybe a little bigger however not much in it I think. The Gn beat the Ton in pretty much every other way. The storage is much cleverer in the Gn, it's got a shoe tunnel at the bottom, 2 big side pockets, a smaller front pocket, and a neat top pocket just big enough for helmet and gloves. IIRC (though maybe doing it a disservice) the Ton just had 2 great big side pockets and shoe tunnel? Though the bat sleeves in the Gn arent padded on the inside, that doesn't matter because they're only backing onto my pads and on the outer side they're well protected by the bag's outer padding. I think the Gn might just shade the Ton for quality of construction though time will tell there. Also a couple of features on the Gn lacking in the ton, it has a couple of nice little handles on the side ideal for lifting out of the car or carrying a short distance like an ordinary holdall; the Ton just had a little handle at the top, not so user friendly IMHO. Finally the Gn seemed to have a bigger sturdier base, I wasn't convinced the Ton would ever stand up by itself.
I was a bit worried the Gn might be a bit small however it's a bit of a tardis. I've just loaded all my gear into it from my old wheelie (which has larger dimensions but definitely less space-efficient) and there's still a bit of room to spare... Ok some people will have more gear and I'd forget it if you're a keeper but otherwise it's fine. Takes a bit of organising your kit to stop it all toppling over but not too bad. I slung it on my back and it felt very comfy. Well pleased, life without a wheelie starts on Tuesday
.
Otherwise I resisted tempation. FC I couldn't agree more about the Vks softs. The Pro series gloves at £40 are superb, very very similar to (but better than) my Pumas which were £15 more. I know what gloves I'll be getting next. I had a bit of a look at helmets too because I want to replace my old Masuri soon. However left in a bit of a quandary... the new Masuris felt very uncomfortable, apart from being very heavy (which everyone's commented on), the medium seemed to press on my head in all the wrong places while the large was simply too big. I Was actually more impressed by the Gn Test Opener, ever though i think they look ugly and I'd be worried it would make me bat like Alastair Cook
