What will you work on before 2015 season
« on: December 12, 2014, 11:27:14 AM »

So for some including myself winter nets will begin the first week of Jan 2015. With this is mind thought it would be good for people to share what they will be working on during nets. Then people that have some advice can share some tips, drills etc to help fellow forum members.

Batting - I will be working on 2 things firstly my guard. I have batted on leg stump for the past 2 years following a season that was filled with LBW decisions. Problem is in my stance I am slightly open so at times I'm reaching to far when driving and when I play the cut I find I play it a lot in the air and can be caught at gully or backwards point. Looking to go back to a middle stump guard.

Secondly the cut shot and playing to 3rd man area. The cut shot I think has something to do with my guard and because I'm reaching I'm leaning back when playing it. The shot to 3rd man I want to develop as a way of rotating the strike really and scoring boundaries early on in my innings. I score a lot of my runs on the drive, pull shot and through mid on and off so pretty good playing straight bat shots. And being an opening bat I want to play more behind square to move fielders from my string shot positions.

Wicket keeping - firstly just to get back into catching the ball for the first few months but then working on getting my hands and head on the right position when taking balls standing up but down leg side . I missed a few stumping a last year down this side and iv found it very hard to get my body in the right position to take he ball and bring it back in a quick enough motion to effect a stumping.

Finally bowling - although I don't bowl much in league cricket ( also playing for a new club this year so keeping spot may be filled) I need to get back to moving the ball away form RH bat. I seem to be bringing the ball into RH now but off the pitch. 4 years ago I used to bowl first change when I stopped keeping for a few years and was getting lovely late swing at a decent enough pace. Never quick enough to worry a half decent bat with my pace but my late swing was effective and then could set people up with one that came back a little or went straight on. I think iv lost some of the shape by trying when I bowl to bowl too quick.

Any ideas for any of the above will be welcomed and please share you goals or advice with the rest of the forum.

With the keeping, I find personally its about getting a good sight of the ball for as long as possible, especially with leg side takes.

A simple drill at nets is to get someone doing throw downs, another person in the position of batsman.  Don't bother with doing it in the nets.  Get the batsman to deliberately move in the crease to be a pain in the a**e.  I found doing this made me naturally focus on picking the ball up for as long as possible.

good topic Soulman
I'm sure my own plans for next year mirror some other forum members, here's my issue that needs addressing:
I'm a natural opener,my personality and shots, I never panic, dont slog and have a basic technique which is considered solid by all my team-mates,and i'm often referred to as the calmest and most technically correct batsman and the only natural opener in the club-we have 4, yes 4, adult league sides.
A the end of last year I lost my place opening, not scoring quick enough on difficult wet wickets so I know I'm going to be down the order in the middle-so a change of game needed.Last year my club was in Div 2, I scored 2nd highest runs, the previous year we were in Div 1, far better bowling and I was highest run scorer in my team...
Face starting not to fit as you might be gathering by now :)
however, I recognise I need to score quicker, and I know a change has already happened and this year it will be middle order..
Tricky problem.....yes.
I'm all ears as usual for any tips
thanks

Perfecting a leg-cutter and pitching my stock in-swinger a little bit shorter.

All aspects of batting remain a mystery to me!

Whatever you're planning on working on I'd advise finding a good coach who can help. Many players try to develop this however you want to make sure that youre doing it right and for the right reason.

Soulman - you mention its down to your stance that you're hitting the ball in the air which I doubt is correct, unless your feet remain completely still??.....I think its probably your grip and whilst this might be OK for the majority of your shots it may not be suited all. A good coach would help identify and advise with this.

Strength and Speed, seem to have lost a bit of both over last 2 seasons, although I only played 5 matches the entire season past so could also be fitness.

Some of you may have read my training diary. I have already started working with a coach and will be doing all I could to improve my batting generally focussing on

Drives, front foot especially
Cut Shots
Keeping shape
Scoring runs

Putting all my bats to good use. None shall be spared, that is my oath. Whether it is nets or practice matches or league games, they all will see action. All reviews will be updated to include thoughts on performance. Non-performers will be banished to Bola sessions.  >:(

same as every year, trying to get more consistency (better judgement) in my batting and beat the young guns in the field/between the wickets.

Thanks Dave never thought about my grip. I have quite a soft grip on the bat as being an opener I really try not to push or go at the ball but it maybe a good shout as it's only the cut shot I sometimes have trouble playing.  I really want to work on it as it's a shot that against the opening bowlers I hardly play the cut I only really play now against the slow bowlers and tend to hit it I front of the wicket through covers off the back foot where as I want to be using the pace and playing through square point to backward Point area.

Soulman - Its Rich here not Dave

I'm a coach and although I work mainly with juniors I have coached several youngsters through to County level and pretty confident I could help.

Where about are you based? If you're nearby I'd happily have a session with you and get you going! If not get a video of yourself batting and I'll take a look to see what we can do from there.
