Ajmal new action

You will see a massive amount of difference in the amount of wickets he takes with that action - if he continues to abide by it.

You cannot impart nearly as much spin from a straight up and down action with the little pivot he has always had. Due to his diminutive size, he is not going to generate a lot of bounce either. I think this is just a way Ajmal can go to the WC and finish out his career.

However, you can now clearly see how much he was chucking it before compared to now!

He was never a huge spinner of the ball and I think he is still banned from bowling the Doosra. Early days but he's going to have to rely on more conventional ways of getting batsman out.

I wonder how many 'spinners' wickets on a saturday are basically just lobbing it up and waiting for a batsmen to hole out at long on/moo corner.... I'd imagine most.

I'm a proper spinner, it's straight mid-wicket or wide mid-on thank you very much!  ;)

Most English club spinners. Rely on flight and variation of pace. Its hard for English ,Aussies Saffa's to get away with " Mystery" sic spin as they all come thru structured cricket development from U10's and up, with proper Umpires who will just NO BALL the chucking out of them. Nothing to do with unorthodoxy and over coaching.

I thought you played a good level?

Anyone who does that at the level I play, or have played, may pick up the odd wicket but will get taken apart big time!

That's like saying how many 'fast' bowlers wickets just come from bowling straight!

Scandalous! ;-)

Sundays mainly but it seems fairly common. Pretty sure a few of the Prem 2 spinners were doing just this too so it happens at all levels, higher ones are probably better at making it look like a valid tactic :), rather than just buying a wicket.

Looks like he's doing the sensible thing and taking the time rather than rushing back and potentially having a year ban if no balled again!

Interestingly, on the subject on chucking

How many spinners in club cricket chuck it?

I play in the Liverpool Competition and theres at least three, one is a pro.....

Nothing ever seems to get done about these lads

Given Gloucestershire have a chucker in their ranks... I've only known one 'spinner' go into the county squads and he's been totally ruined. He now chucks it and I hope he gets called for it. If this is what county coaches are teaching then tbh, they a) shouldn't be in the game b) should be fired.

I believe I faced two chuckers this year, one playing for Old Down, after I was out I joked with their fielder who said 'yeah, he does chuck it but no one does anything'.... The other played in a league game, I asked teh umpire what he thought a few times while batting and he just wasn't interested. Either he didn't think he was or just couldn't be bothered with the paperwork and reputation (I suspect this is the answer)

Umpires and clubs need to report chuckers for the good of the game, not let them off.

I got no-balled for chucking in a Sunday friendly once.  :-[

We had a panel umpire (who seems to like us) and as we were comfortably winning started doing impressions when we were bowling. The oppo were up for a laugh and told me to do Murali so I did  :D

So with Bangladesh beating Pakistan quite comprehensively and with Ajmal producing figures of 0-74 in his 10 overs, how long will he stick with his 'new action' before he slips back into old habits?
