Excellent ODI/T20 captain, found wanting in the Test arena with his generally negative style of captaincy.

He goes as India's most successful Test captain, but IMO Ganguly was lightyears better.

Nowhere near the best because of his atrocious test captaincy!

His negativity in the test arena means he'll never be a "modern great"

Tbh in the test format, as soon as kohli nearly won the Adelaide test, he should have stepped down then, or been stepped down.
He didn't, weather for selfish reason or not we don't know, but India took a severe backward step in the two games since.

Now a draws not possible, he's stepped away.

Odi and t20 format are his bread and butter, and he's won so so many things and done such great things.... But tests are the pinnacle of the sport..... Should have tried harder, could have been so much better,

Good riddance! Hate the way he has played Test Cricket!
Can't fault his limited over ability though, one of the best ODI/T20 players of the modern era!

I echo most thoughts here.Fantastic one day t20 captain but pretty abysmal test captain. Far far to negative. On a separate note I love the way Kholi is winding up the aussies ( and getting it back)

Always felt he played test cricket because he had to and his captaincy illustrated that. Never been his biggest fan after making light of corruption and match fixing.

Hopefully kohli can take a young team forward and restore the value of test cricket in India. Though I won't hold my breath...

Dhoni has been a great ambassador for Indian Cricket. Given the bowling attack he has to work with, it is wrong to call his attitude negative, yes he approach has been passive but he can only do so much as the team.

He is the best captain India has ever had and he has shown extreme maturity by carrying on till Virat grows in confidence as test captain.

Some may think that he should have done it ages ago but hey at least he did what is best for Indian Cricket unlike some other modern day captains.

Sourav was a great captain and really supported his team and youngsters. His passion showed in his game and on his face but I wouldn't call him light years better. While Dhoni continued in Test despite his deteriorating performance, Ganguly did the same with ODI. Dhoni's unique [or limited] technique was more evident in test so was Ganguly's weakness to short bowling.

Credit where it is due, both had different teams and competed against different International Teams and have been legends in their own rights.

Bring a World Cup home for India and you will be adored forever

Top career and to average 38 in Test cricket whilst both skippering and keeping is a top effort and shows that he might have cared a bit more than the small minded on this forum think

Looking forward to him continuing to tee off in limited overs cricket, which is after all what He's best at

They might be the pinnacle of the sport in England and Australia. But they are not, and haven't been, in India for a very long time

and to add to this...he couldn't carry on forever anyways so it is good that he retires now and let young Kohli grow without his shadow. I think he has done what is best for Indian cricket.

Good Timing. Let kohli lead the test team and Dhoni can fully concentrate on 2015 world cup. i don't think team india has many test matches in 2015.

Commendable that he played and skippered all three formats but his tat captaincy was far from making him one of the greatest captains.

Had a huge burden in his shoulders but think it's the right time to pass on the captaincy. Just wonder why he jacked it in and didn't play the last game?

Usually cricketers quit to make a fortune in t20 cricket..... MSD has already done that!
