Purely talking about Tests here. He has been nothing special on the field. However, he's handled himself and the team quite well over the last few years of 'transition' so while isn't a 'great', he isn't a failure etc.

Least now he's playing the formats that he and India care about.

In some ways his performances in tests were symptomatic of Indian cricket as a whole - they cared when it was a home game but lost interest very quickly in all other circumstances.   When he retires from one day cricket, I'll tell all and sundry that one of the greats has gone...as a test cricketer, to be honest India would have been better without for the last few years.

I was kind of expecting it as there was something going on since he opted out of SL series. the reason given was hair line fracture but that can heal very fast. Had enough time to be fit and no reason for him to miss tour games in Aus and the first test. Have great respect for this guy, outstanding leading in all 3 formats especially in India. Was SRT's recommendation to make him skipper and worked out really well especially he took over the reins at very young age and limited experience before becoming the captain.

he can't have been that bad at test captaincy I mean India did spend over a year as the number one ranked team under him... rather better than we managed!

To be honest, Dhoni's card was marked once Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh faded away. For along time both were key to India's success. Without Khan, India's fast bowlers are pretty much clueless. Singh at his best was better than Ashwin/Jadeja/Mishra put together.

Dhoni won 27/60 Tests as Indian skipper, but only 6/30 outside of India. Since the 2011 World Cup(both Khan and Singh's last hoorah), India have won only 2 Tests outside India(Kingston 2011 & Lords 2014). 15 defeats and 6 draws.

That might count as evidence were the test rankings a particularly effective or clear indicator of relative ability, but we all know that they are not.  Nor do all teams play one another an equal number of times, or over a set period.

Dhoni was pretty good in the early part of his career.

Post IPL 1 and after finding his new Godfather Darth Sidious Srinivasan he seems to be not giving his 100%, almost not interested in the games at times.

The whole maverick persona was lost.

He was captaining a pretty ordinary Test team lately, with either Bowlers or Batsmen or both failing since last few seasons, there's only so much a captain can do without the team contributing.

He could have looked like he cared for a start...!

Aside from the fact that Gale clearly didn't and was the victim of an ECB stitch up, do you not notice the issue - Dhoni in ODIs cares...and they win the world cup.  In tests he looks like he'd rather be having a tooth extracted and....

Because people should be allowed to tell people to f*ck off back to their own country on a professional sports field without consequence  ???.

Seems you can get away with a lot on a sports pitch though in fairness, in the name of 'banter'

Nothing as severe as that though. Stump mics for the Australia-India test were so loud that you could vaguely make out the majority of conversations near the pitch.

Do agree though, saying that is so far over the line it really is bordering racist.
