Stats and averages

Just a little thought I had today and thought I'd bring it here to have a little discussion over it. It just kind of struck me how in cricket there's such a wide amount of stats but so many things that can affect and distort them. Batting averages can be dependent on quality of bowlers faced, pitches played on etc. It's surprising to me that no one thought of a way to somehow combine statistics (other than the horrible batting index thing sky had in the summer) or weight them in a way that would make it more clear at an instant glance who a better player is and the fact we've used basic batting and bowling averages to do so since the game began.
Discuss...?

Wasn't there a suggestion on here somewhere about a "form average" where they compare your overall stats to your seasons stats to your last 5 games stats?
As for bowling average I think there should be some sort of system so top order batsmens wickets are worth more stats wise than the lower order. Our 3rd team skipper earned the name tailenders specialist last season as he'd always have a little burst with the new nut, then bring himself back on to clean up the tail.

I guess the most effective way to do what you suggest in the second part of your post would be to weight a bowlers average dependent on the batting average of the batsmen they have taken the wicket of.
Could potentially do the opposite and weight a batsmans average dependent on the bowling average of the player he has scored the runs against?
