I can see both sides of this "debate" because sometimes it helps to be in cahoots via clubs, schools etc. but nothing can make way for hard work and discipline! For instance; my family have not had much money at all and it meant that there was the bare minimum in terms of kit and hand-me-downs to get by, state schools and external net sessions irrespective of weather kept us busy and away from issues surrounding our 'area'
But in order to progress, with quite a political aspect to the local county side- it forced my younger brother to move clubs in order to even get a look in. But even to this day he says that irrespective of moving clubs, the constant net sessions on the cold and windy days have got him to where he is in terms of playing. I mean 1st XI and county at 16 isn't too bad, and still doesn't worry about all the 'sponsorships' that his mates brag about... And although he was envious of all their top gear for discounted price (with our background in mind) I think he has progressed more without the 'hype' of a supposed sponsorship deal as it allows the focus to be more on playing than the latest blade.
I reckon that it does help having the confidence as a youngster that a brand is backing you... Although the majority is for retail boosts, but having a bat thats 20 per cent off doesn't mean you'll be smashing tonnes each week, the hard work you get in brings more back to your game.
So my advice to you
@harry gamble is focus on your game and when the time comes that a company comes your way offering goods go for it then. A lot of the time a company will offer you a discount anyway if you buy it all from them so take it as you will.
