I have a pair of trainers I'd like to get spiked up. I was just wondering if there are any type of trainers that are not suitable to be spiked? I will try and upload a picture of my soles if that helps. It is also missing a small chunk of tread where I drag my right foot bowling in nets!

The missing area isn't ideal. It can probably be bodged at best and at worst they are un-spikeable.

Th only type that isn't suitable is the Nike Air type with the air bladder under the heel. Even these can be half spiked though.

Cheers, I thought I had kept the bit that came off so I could stick it back on but I can't find it now. Would I need to send them in to find out if they are "spikeable" or not?

if you are ever near taunton, there is a bloke there called the shoe doctor that does it. might be worth a phone call? there is somebody else who has been mentioned on the forum before but can remember their name.

They are spikeable they will just put on a new sole. I've had Asics with the same sole spiked and Nike Airs (half spike).

I did a quick google last night and only came up with Vitas and the cricket Doctor that I had previously heard off. Neither are close enough to pop in so wanted to find out what people thought so I don't waste money on postage for them to be unspikeable.

We use Brian and Brenda. You pay more to us than you will if you go to them directly. Getting hold of them can be tricky (no email, no website, they answer phone calls/texts intermittently) and they only take cash/cheque/postal order as payment.

We can handle all of that on your behalf without the hassle of having to chase them (took me about 2 months to set up an account with Brian, he was unusually busy at the time) to arrange things. You can also pay us via card or paypal if you prefer.

I would say they can be spiked, with a new piece of sole being glued into place. Won't know for sure until they get their hands on them though. The shoe doctor will probably tell you via twitter whether they can be done.

Must be a cobbler thing... Tried the Shoedoctor twice over a month ago with no reply as of yet, but may just be busy or holidays. Still in business I hope!

Brian and Brenda are easy enough to deal with you don't need anyone to do it for you.

Give them a call, post your shoes with a cheque and they will be returned when they are done.

Mate, just a word of warning if you're thinking of using these for bowling. I had a pair of running shoes spiked up some years ago because I really liked the feel of them and how lightweight they felt. However, after a handful of games they began to fall apart, and I think it was simply because normal trainers are not constructed to deal with the specific rigours of bowling (toe drag being the obvious example). Furthermore I felt that it didn't afford me anywhere near enough support in the ankle area. If you're after something low profile and lightweight but still offers support in all the right areas give the New Balance 4040's a try. I wore them last season and found them to be excellent.

I was only planning on using them to bat in. I keep normally but prefer my current spikes for that as I do drag my feet and would no doubt ruin them.

If stoke is anywhere nearer to you Gary at Spyder bats does them. I got mine there done a few weeks ago. Full spikes for �30 and he has done a sterling job and they were done in days.
