England ODI XI - Parallel Universe!!
« on: January 17, 2015, 11:50:33 AM »

Just a bit of fun, but reading the BBL thread, I thought it would be fun to pick an England One Day XI for the world cup, full of players ignored, dropped, sacked, out of the squad or out of favour with the ECB.

Basically anyone not in the current squad. Injured players (Kieswetter) are not allowed, as that is not necessary the ECB's fault.

He res my effort:

Lumb
Carberry
KP
Malan
Roy
Stokes
Bairstow +
Bresnan
Topley
Parry
Onions

12th man - Wright

I know this will provoke great debate - 'he's rubbish', 'why isn't he in?'  But as with all theseforum threads, this is a bunch of players that I personally would like to have seen given more of a chance / brought back in.

Perhaps more Lions OD games would work, as I really don;t think we've seen the best of Lumb, Stokes, Bairstow and Parry

That's a good side to be honest. What about Alistair Cook to open and captain in place of Lumb? (Not really)

I reckon your side would beat the current ODI team

So do i. I belieive there is something wrong in the coaching/ selection set up where talents such as Stokes, Parry and Wright haven't grown and become international stars. I know a large proportion is down to the players blls and determination, and that's not England's fault - but these guys could be game-changers if we could get them ticking.

Just look at the England qualified players in the BIg Bash they seem to be doing ok. But won't get a look in at the top table

I think they are so worried about failing that they put too much pressure on themselves, look at Samit Patel he has done ok for England but I'm sure all he ever got was from the coaches was he's too fat to play.

The must be fundamental problems with coaching from an early age when bowlers are coached to get in the right areas and don't look at pace.  Finn is a prime example going from a 90mph bowler to an 80-85 because he doesn't want to bowl in the wrong areas

He's just come back now. Took 4 for 91 and hit 55 for the England Lions out in South Africa a few days ago.

Strange he wasn't in the World Cup squad then. Hopefully we see him in the test side again, was impressive last summer

Assuming that Sidebottom's international retirement mans that he is exempt as well, I'd go for the following:

Lumb/Wright
Lyth
Pietersen
Stokes
Carberry
Bairstow
Clarke
Rashid
Napier
Plunkett
Footitt

EDIT - I think Wright is probably a better player now than he was when he got a run int eh team so I figure he needs to be included.

Napier and rashid should have had a descent run in the odi team before now, both can hit big straight and add something with the ball. Napier is a proven death bowler at 90mph on the county circuit something we dont currently have in the team and rashid offers a leg spin alternative, which is missing in the make up of the squad, also both good fielders. The fact they haven't had a sniff to date is a joke.

Forgot about Napier pretty unlucky to atleast not get a go considering some other players..
