ODI team
« on: January 20, 2015, 08:20:19 AM »

question for the forum

Given all the one day cricket going on at the moment who voila you pick as a team of fantasy players.
Would you have a stroke maker like Bell and Amla,
Or hard hitters like Warner, Finch, Gayle or McCullum.
It's such a great start with so many one day games going at the moment.

One of each is a nice balance, but I'm very happy with the Warner/Finch combo at the top for us. I think a conventional Test opener like Cook is now obsolete in ODI cricket, but a good, genuine shotmaker with a sound technique who can average 40+ at a strike rate of 80+ is still someone that can be very important to a 50-over side. I still reckon the Gilchrist/Mark Waugh opening pair from the late-90s/early-00s was one of the best ever. Gilly could thump it, Waugh the classy strokemaker who could still play an aggressive innings but usually could bat at their own pace.

As a cricket fan it's just brilliant to see how teams are approaching the new one day fun and england are finally getting a balance as both bell and Ali are great shot players plus Ali can go big, but tiptop and McCullum is a great hard hitting top two, gayle on his own when he gets going is immense plus like you said Warner at the moment it's between him and AB for best one day batsman for me

Warner, gayle, finch, Amla, mccullum,ab     Don't really need much more than that to chase anything

Amla
McCullum
Sangakkara
Kohli
de Villiers
Mathews
Dhoni
Starc
Johnson
Steyn
Ajmal

The spinner is the hardest spot to fill in world cricket atm imo. Ajmal is streets ahead but just hard to tell with a remodelled action, have to wait and see!

I think Gayle would be a hindrance to many of the other top dogs in world cricket. I for one certainly wouldn't only like to have a single available if I was looking for gaps, it would put me off my game. My ODI top five would go something like:

Warner
Amla
AB
Sanga
McCullum

Would love to get Kane Williamson in there somewhere, hard to drop any of those five.

Narine surely has to be up there as a spinner.  Very few in world cricket can pick him and he can bowl in powerplays!

Those picking a side without Virat Kohli clearly know nothing about ODI cricket. I'm pretty sure the Kid has 20+ 100s and chasing he's got 10+ 100s

Haha and picking Trent Boult, who shouldn't even be in the NZ squad of 15, he's been awful in One Day cricket

Lyon at 8, nosebleed!

Mitch whacks it and Dale is no mug with the bat either. Not a bad team apart from the order ;)

Ok Mitch 8 - Lyon 10  :D

Is there a better spinner out there than Lyon? I remember Narine being impressive in last seasons IPL but he seems to have gone quiet. Ashwin looks good sometimes but more often than not seems to be justgoing through the motions. Any other spinner I should consider?

Nathan Lyon? You mean the bloke who has played 8 ODI's in his whole career?

1. Warner
2. Amla
3. Steve Smith
4. Kohli
5. AB De Villiers (WK)
6. Corey Anderson
7. Jadeja
8. Johnson
9. Woakes
10. Steyn
11. Starc

5 seriously quality batsmen, 6 bowling options and potentially bat down to 10.
