Wicket Keeping - Taking Ball Down Leg Side
« on: January 25, 2015, 01:36:32 PM »

I am quite new to wicket keeping, last season being my first full year.

In the nets today I have done well again, one problem I have is:

When standing up and taking ball down leg side I am going back and across, as opposed to just across. Thus leaving me now chance of any stumping?

Is this just repetition or is they anything else I could try??

Have a word with your bowlers  and get them to correct  their line. There is only so much a keeper can do. By getting distracted  with covering leg side you could  end up missing stumpings.

Ha Yeah good point!!

Standard not that high though, and we have 2 juniors who bowl in adult side!

How?

Seems to me like you just need to work on your footwork going side to side.Basically this is all about repetition. A good way to do this is to get a straight line of cones an practice "sweeping" in a straight line side to side from one end to the other with your gloves down along the ground.

Balance, balance, balance.  Practice repeatedly as noted above.

As a side note, keeping is one of those things, the more you play as a keeper, the better you'll get as you get 50+ overs of practice every weekend.  Whereas with batting, if you're not netting and you get a few low scores you can spend an age not improving.

Stick with it, try to enjoy it and it'll come.

Cheers Guys!!

I do enjoy it very much, enjoy it as much as batting I think.....

Agree with the 2 above comments, balance is something I do need to work on my improving my core!

And repetition was what I thought.

Going it in net is also slightly false as you are enclosed.....

I refuse to keep in nets as I hate the claustrophobic feeling.

If there is room in the hall where you net, offer to take bowlers off to the side (no net required, just a full wicket length) and keep to them for a few overs each at a time so they can get some rhythm as can you.

In addition, do this in the summer at training.  Have a bat.  Then offer to take bowlers onto the outfield or any spare used wickets and let them bowl a spell outside of the nets!

Stay low going across to many keepers come up from stance do not let your head come up glide across with your head staying level as it is in your stance.

Move early so pick the line up quick and get into a rhythm.

Basics are done at slow pace get a bag and get your mate to throw balls down the leg side at easy pace work on footwork but stay low as i said keep your head level do not come up.

You will lose the flight of the ball for a split second but get eyes back as soon as you can.

i do the squats one left one right to help with strength and conditioning and helps you glide across.

Once your comfortable with that the key then is to get across and then get your weight going back to the stumps having the weight on your right leg to enable you to move naturally move as quick as possible to the stumps but do not do this till you master part one the getting across staying low and keeping your head level.

So.

1.keep low moving across
2.keep head level
3.get outside the line of the batsman if you can
4.watch the ball into your hands (accept you lose a split second control when up to the quicks it more rhythm which you will get with confidence)
5.weight going back towards the stumps.

One last point beware of the little side step be confindent in your movement small side step toward the leg side can be a killer be positive with a bigger first step but be balanced and keep low  i could actually do a video for this

As Benny says side to side repitition of movement

If you find you struggle to keep your hands low when moving to the side even when you're concentrating on it, try to concentrate on keeping your head low. If think strong hamstrings and legs in general are pretty helpful to keep your shape and balance. I've only been keeping for a few years but I've played hockey for a long time and did a lot of gym work on my core. Squats are very good.

I tend to practice indoors with the bowling machine to groove my rhythm. I try to get a batsmen (usually I feed a bowling machine after to return the favour) to stand in front with a thin shaved down bat.

Echoing the above, staying low is the key.

The reason you find yourself going back is because you want to take the ball at a more comfortable height, so a step back equates to the ball reaching you maybe 6 inches higher.

If you stay down you should be able to get hold of the ball on the rise and whip off those bails like a champ ;)
