So...

Indoor tonight I played for a very friendly side who basically go out to have fun, have a laugh, try hard but bless them they aren't very good. I help them out when they can't raise 6 players (so this was only the 2nd game all winter season). Anyway, oppos are miles better, everyone knows it and they rack up only 116. So, I bat at 6 to give the other guys the chance etc as I'm just there for the crack and not there to actually play so to speak

anyway, we get all 6 wickets which was only the 2nd time all year apparantly and off we go on the chase...

first five batsmen all fall for <10 runs each ... score 32-5 off 6
they put two men back on the wall to block off 4's and 6's..

so I decided to just pick up at least 1 run a ball and a few 3's... They are giving me hell as I'm not really going for it.. after a few personal insults at me and a few digs the game ends with us on 80 odd for 5 off 12. THey are moaning and having a go at me for 'not trying'.. I didn't say anything but did say to the umpires 'what am I supposed to do? have a slog going for runs they've cut off and just gift them my wicket?' at the end of the day, I was never going to chase it down alone and the game costs me �5.. why on earth would I slog and get out when I can just bat normally and use it as a net.

Do you guys think I was wrong and shoudl have just slogged giong for 6's when I cna say with 99% accuracy that I'd have been out within an over. or although boring, do you think it's ok to basically pick up whatever runs come along but not really take any risks etc.

No you were not wrong why should you give your wicket away to please the opposition? Under the circumstances it to pick up runs and not take risks was correct.
Also You pay your money and you do it your wAy.

I agree with senior player.

You shouldn't give your wicket away, it's their job to get you out.

Just ignore the sledging mate, take it as a back handed compliment

You did the right thing... end of story..... however you must have been frustrated by your own team mates for not putting in a better show to try to win the game, even though they take the game less seriously...

mate, when I say they aren't very good.. they really aren't. If you bowled full and straight they will eventunally miss it or spoon it up. They just love playing. Unfortunately, teams in chelt for some reason take indoor seriously (even though all the teams including div 1 are pretty crap tbh!)

Playing for a similarly rubbish team you did the perfect thing! We go and play because we love the game, we really enjoy it and don't care. We have had one or two oppositions who have got annoyed or whatever or been insulting telling us we are rubbish! We know we are rubbish! we don't need to be reminded. They should be grateful for the free runs on their average and get on with it. usually second time around they know what to expect and they have a laugh but if not our plan is to block out a t20 match, score as little runs as possible and just cause massive frustration.

I joined my mate's team last summer somewhat begrudgingly but the captain/organiser is a good mate. The team is the OFCC (Over Forties CC) and I've got to admit I enjoyed playing for them more than my club team this year.

The OFCC's motto is to enjoy the cricket and not take it too seriously but within the team including me were players who still wanted to win even though they were friendly games and it didn't matter. The social afterwards was actually as big a part as actually playing.

So, perhaps I'm not ready to make the full transition yet to the OFCC but actually most of the players are quality but just not as young or as quick/agile as in past years and/or have family commitments.

I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make.. except that whichever team/game you play in - you're clear in your mind whether you're there to just enjoy playing the game for the love/enjoyment of it and whether you're playing to win or use it as a net to practice etc and not worry about anything else, especially sledging from the other team.

So you had a definitely doable indoor chase of 80ish off 6 and decided to just take no risks for the rest of the innnings and dab it around for 1s? Shame on you. Sport is about competition, even if it is friendly competition, and that's definitely chasable. Can't say I approve of the opposition having a pop, but what's the point in not trying? Sensible thing to do would have been bat carefully for a couple of overs and try and set a platform for an assault at the end.

I would have gone for it and would want my team mates to do the same but if your team were happy with your approach that's probably the main thing

I would have played myself in and then tried to have a go - I don't think you did the wrong thing, you need to get value for your match fee!! And the good times need to make up for the ducks

Sounds like the opposition were just a bit annoyed they couldn't get you out... realised they weren't so good after all.

Play it how you see it / feel it. You played your game, thats the point of having one. nice knock by the way, i bet it was interesting with the fielders sledging in such close confines

it wasn't sledging, they were personally abusing me. Not a single cricket comment was said. Not sure how I could chase 80 off 6 overs without being able to score a signle 4 or 6.. ok if EVERY ball went for 3.. chances of that?? slim. It was still competition, a competition to see if they can get me out.

As I said, it's not how I would choose to bat indoors because it's not a good indoor knock but given the game, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. I knew I would never have realistically scored the runs, so why try. If I get out after 10 balls they are happy, I'm annoyed and we lose anyway.. this way, they aren't as happy about their win, I've at least got my moneys worth and we lost.. sort of win win. Of course, their capt could have brought his fielders off the back wall and given me the chance to hit 4/6's?? maybe creating an error?? so, I think he could have been more proactive. unfortunately, in win lose games, you don't need to think .. just sit back, block the runs and wait for people to slog

Being on the receiving end of some smashings when the opposition are way way better than us, I can tell you its really depressing when they have one lad that takes it far too seriously! If the result is obvious from ball one, everybody should have fun and just enjoy playing cricket. If there is an over throw or a wide, it doesn't matter. If there is a game to be had then yes play as hard as you want, but if your playing for the love of the game, there is nothing worse than somebody taking it seriously on either side really! IMHO
