arm guards - people's thoughts and experience
« on: March 05, 2015, 12:33:56 PM »

I've never worn an arm guard nor have I ever considered one necessary before. I'm not sure why but im considering purchasing one to try and just see what the effects are boh physically and mentally. Some people have told me in the past that they've hampered there movement with the too hand and I'm concerned about that. I think it's more a short ball confidence thing I'll be thinking about. Outdoors I pick up the bouncer just fine and I'd say I'm quite comfortable hooking and pulling. Indoors is a different story and the last few weeks I've worn a few on my forearm. What are people's thoughts on arm guards.... comfort levels, experience wearing one, decent ones on the market etc.
Be good to get a mix of opinions. I know they're only cheap for a basic one but I don't want it to effect my game

Ive been netting indoors with one on and it has just made me feel more comfortable while batting to the extent that i have decided to wear one all season.

Im going to get a stretton armguard as soon as i can afford it because if i going to be using it every game i might aswell invest in a good one.

i havent found it to hamper any movement at all, just make sure you dont have it on tight as it may tire your arm.

I've got an £8 Adidas one I bought about 4-5 years ago after wearing on in the nets.

It made me play slightly straighter when wearing it, and it didn't hinder my movements, but I couldn't forget it was there if you know what I mean.

Thanks guys. Yeah I don't want to be fidgeting with it every other ball or constantly being irritated by its presence.

On the other hand I feel it may give me a bit more confidence indoors to stay in line and get up with the short ball.

I use sweatbands on my front arm, purely a psychological thing.  Reminds me to keep my elbow up and play straight!

Never really had any mobility issues using a padded arm guard and for the sake of a tenner it's worth avoiding a broken arm. It happens.

On sighting the ball indoors, I don't think you are alone. Rarely net anywhere that the light matches playing outside. I'm sure it's a factor when you get outside and find you have more time than you expected (slower surfaces being the other).

personally I don't think light is an issue in most places, it's more the pace and bounce of indoor wickets that makes injuries more likely and outside easier. It's why I just turn up to watch at club nets instead of bat, too many bowlers bowl silly lengths that get up way more than they would normally and indoors it really races onto you as well. Not getting injured in the nets just for a bowlers ego.

I do wear my arm guard and chest guard in my own net when doing shorter stuff at high speed purely because when you face 400+ balls in a session you are bound to miss the odd one

Just get hit on the point of the elbow and you will know why people ware them. Its like being plugged into the mains. I've worn one ever since, its not a pleasant experience and i don't want it again, couldn't grip a bat for three days. I like the feel of the normal strap on ones but have started wearing an Aero in the nets and i forget I've got it on. But it looks horrible.

I just find it hard picking the shorter length up indoors anyway. No screens and dark mats never help lol. Luckily nobody I face in the winter is ever quick enough to do serious damage. But the odd bruise here and there gets annoying.

Our lads aren't daft to be fair to them, but there is the odd length that rifles up with the seam.

I'm going to purchase one and see what it's like but I appreciate everyone's comments. My next question was going to be on the strap ones or aeros but kippers answered that already so cheers.

You'd recommend strap over the aero one then or is it purely the aesthetics  you don't like about them?

Anesthetics the Aero, you will forget your wearing it, but it looks like your arms wearing tights darling. The strap on ones have a certain Armour chic about them. On the other hand I'm always fiddling around with the strap on one's but just forget about the Aero. I like there kit, the best buy I made this winter was an Aero box. Absolute revelation after the cheap and nasty ones I've used since a kid.

I've worn 2 different arm guards in the past, a Newbery and a Kook Kahuna Pro (which is real quality construction and protection wise!)... Last season I opted to go with a wide sweat band instead only because I was convinced the arm guard added weight although there's hardly any weight to them. Reducing weight is a bit of a constant obsession for me and actually last night took off all my second grips on the 5 bats I have, which near as, has reduced all of them by a couple of ounces.

I think in outdoor nets with some of the wayward bowling, it was safer to wear one just to protect myself from short pitched or full balls 'hurled' directly at me. However, the bounce is not replicated on the wickets we play on so never been hit on the arm or wrist, which is where I have caught one or two in the past in nets.

It's a confidence and mental thing in my opinion. I also have an aero chest guard which I've never used at all either in nets or in matches.

I agree with former comments that at nets or indoors it may be worth wearing one just for piece of mind but then saying that if you're not going to use one in outdoor matches then why bother and get used to getting part of the glove, handle or bat in the way to protect yourself.

Regardless, I still have the arm guards in reserve including an aero one which I couldn't see myself using as a 'sock type' fitting. I get enough stick with my aero p2 leg guards at training, but they're so light and do a great job.
